There have been rumblings about an impending second installment in the I Am Legend (would-be) franchise being made, ever since the original 2007 film grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide in theaters. Warner Bros. has finally struck a deal to do just that, with Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman – who co-wrote and produced the original Legend adaptation – now onboard to collaborate on the project (in some form).

Here’s where things get a bit tricky. The second I Am Legend flick is (as Deadline puts it) “not being called a prequel,” and is being fashioned so as to allow Will Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville (if the A-lister so chooses).

Quick history lesson: some three years ago, Smith reportedly conceived an idea for an I Am Legend prequel, the setup for which would have seen the Robert Neville character team up with pockets of survivors in the aftermath of an apocalyptic man-made virus – resulting in him “interacting, bonding, and ultimately failing to save them,” thus setting the stage for the events of I Am Legend.

However, that idea was scrapped in favor of a more direct sequel. The script for I Am Legend 2 was to be written by then-unknown D.B. Weiss (now, known as the co-creator of HBO’s Game of Thrones TV series) and would have somehow allowed for Smith to reprise his role as Mr. Neville, despite his (spoiler?) having been seemingly blown up by a grenade during the climax of the first film.

Jump to the present and Warner Bros. has instead recruited up-and-comer Arash Amel (The Expatriate) to pen the initial draft for the new I Am Legend movie. There’s no word yet on whether or not the project is still being fashioned as a sequel – though, it could be in a state of flux similar to the studio’s 300 spin-off, a film which was long assumed to be a prequel/midquel, but has recently been labeled a sequel instead.

Assuming the second installment of I Am Legend is not simply a prequel-in-disguise, there are two ways for a Smith-starring sequel to make sense (sort of):
Robert Neville is featured heavily in flashbacks, in a manner similar to how I Am Legend chronicles the chaotic quarantine of Manhattan (via its protagonist’s memories).
Amel’s screenplay accepts I Am Legend‘s alternate ending (which partly restores the thematic value of Richard Matheson’s source material, while also allowing Robert Neville to live) as being “canon” – and ignores the much-decried climax to the film adaptation’s theatrical cut.

Obviously, the easier (and, frankly, more interesting) route would be to develop a prequel along the lines of what Smith originally had in mind, rather than attempting to awkwardly navigate around the conclusion to the theatrically-released version of I Am Legend. For the time being, though, it seems that the former may NOT be what Warner Bros. has in mind. Make of that what you will.

this would be a lot easier to make had they gone with the first, and IMO better, ending and not blowed Will Smith up.

They could always make that alternate ending the opening scene. After a opening re cap before the opening credits. If they did a sequel

This movie could be good if they either completely change the zombie things/make the cg better or make them intelligent. I know the first movie played around with the idea that they're intelligent and the alternate/much better ending would have cemented the fact that they are not just brainless.

They could open the film with the theatrical ending from the first film and where it cuts in the explosion have Will Smith wake up and have it as a nightmare...... it's a little hokey and reeks of retcon more than a George Lucas prequel but that's one way to do it.

And then from there they could use the alternate ending, like Donut said or make up an entirely new ending and show it as a re-cap in an opening title sequence and then back to the point where Smith has woken up, wherever he is...

I personally dont see how they can do this and get Robert Neville in if its a sequel, anyway they do will feel very contrived and forced but we'll see I guess.

This seems like one of those sequels no one asked for. The first one was bad enough, they shouldn't waste the money on this.

Aww man, I absolutely loved the first one. Interesting to see what they'll do with a sequel. One of my favorite scenes...

Wait what? I liked the first movie but Robert Neville died at the end and the first was nearly 15 years ago.

The only way this would even make sense is if they either bring Smith back for flashbacks or go with the alternate/original ending as canon and just retcon the actual ending.

I guess they'll go with the alternate ending for this which was the better ending anyway. WB probably will throw a lot of money behind this one.

Wonder if Francis Lawrence will come back to direct, considering his increased clout garnered from directing the last three of the Hunger Games films, or if they’ll get someone else. His eye and knack for creating tense horror scenes was part of what made that film for me. Bringing back James Newton Howard would be also be a plus. Would be nice for this to maintain the look, tone, feel and atmosphere of the original as much as possible.

One thing I would like to see change is the look and quality of the VFX for the “vampires”. Those have not aged well. With what they’re able to do nowadays, there’s no excuse for them to not look significantly better.

Curious to see what they do with this. It's been a while since I've watched the first one, might have to revisit it soon.

I'm not against this entirely but I'm also not dying to see it :funny:

Yeah, also the VFX for the vampires already looked bad to people the year the movie came out. Just use actors with practical effects this time, a little bit of CGI for some of their movements.

It was definitely the better ending and closer to the book but 90% of people will have only seen the original ending where he dies.

They could do a mix of that and the VFX for the Lizard Mutts in Mockingjay, Part 2. Those VFX looked solid. No uncanny valley, like with the “vampires”, and always looked physically part of the scene. Also similar horror vibes, but done better.

I’ve never understood the love for this movie. Never read the book so I can’t comment on how faithful it was or not but the stupid CGI zombies/vampires looked so terrible that I couldn’t take it seriously. And I usually really like Will but I didn’t think he was good in this either.

I read it years ago, but I remember that it's not faithful at all. The point of the novel was basically that the main character was the last human left, so in a way he became the monster. (Because he was killing them)

People mostly like the movie because of the dog :D

I get not liking the movie, but I don’t get this. It’s one of his best performances. He’s pretty phenomenal in it. Him (and the dog) pretty much carry the movie.

Personally, the first half of the movie is absolutely brilliant and very much like the book. The moment other humans show up and he’s watching Shrek, yeah, things go off the deep end.

And yes, I Am Legend refers to Neville since he was a legend to the vampires “murdering” them.

I do wonder if they’ll retcon the end and make Neville the head vampire with Michae B Jordan hunting him.
