It kick started Rorschach's investigation, could have ruined the whole sha-bang. Maybe Veidt should have just kidnapped him.

Veidt had a vendetta on him mentioned several times.

Was it necessary for Veidt to do it? No. For being the worlds smartest man, he picked a pretty dumb ass way to go about the whole thing as well. Hell, kidnap him and kill him up in your arctic base, don't throw him out of his own penthouse window. Was it necessary for the story? Yes, because as you said, without Rorshachs investigation, there is no story.

Well had Veidt not chose an easy password, he may have gotten away with it all.

That he did. At least in regards to the story. The New Frontier probably was brought down to tabloid status so the whole Rorchark journal thing became a conspiracy more than likely.

As for kidnapping the comedian. That would seem most likely (since most comic villains have a gamut of traps that they allow the hero a way out of) but Moore was trying to make things to the point. Ozy went there to murder the comedian and throwing him out of the window was the end result.

I think the Comedian's window-throwing was unintended. Yes, Veidt was there to kill him, but Blake was no push-over, and things escalated to the point where there was only one way to kill the Comedian. Toss. Crash. Splat. Human Bean Juice.

I kind of think the same thing but reflecting back, it seemed Blake made pretty short work of the comedian (who was a formidable adversary but ozy seemed to take this all in and planned out what would happen if he surprised him).

In the comic I recall the image of him scopping up the comedian, carrying him over to the window, and throwing him against it so hard that it broke.

Maybe Veidt wanted the investigation to happen, knowing full well that nobody would catch up to him in time anyway to stop him. He was loud and brash when killing Blake so somebody would notice.

Think about it, he really seemed to enjoy telling Night Owl and Rorshach his plan at the end. Plus while he was watching his TV's he keeps tabs on Night Owl and Rorshach knowing they are too late anyway.

This would explain the easy password too. I seem to recall he mentions needing like minded people to start over after his plan. Hence he needed someone to know what he did maybe. Veidt planned it all.
