Nikola Tesla was an engineer and electro-physicist. like Tony Stark, he devised a new superior method for generating power. He's also credited in the creation of robotics and lasers. He alledgedly patented a 'proton cannon' and sattelite based weaponry before his death. Some even believe that he had begun work on a new electrical propulsion system.
He also had a mustache and enjoyed a drink.

Anyone else had this thought?

I thought that Tony Stark was based more on Howard Hughes (hence why his father's name is Howard).

Yeah, Stark is based on Howard Hughes. One could say that Reed Richards and Doctor Doom's relationship was based on the relationship between Tesla and Edison, but one would be talking out of his ass. :o

Stark is based on Howard Hughes - Just check the Marvel Wikia.

Stark was based on the same thing that most of Marvel's classic characters were: Stan Lee's drug-manifested hallucinations. Iron Man was probably from the time Stan thought he saw Howard Hughes trying to escape from a can of tomato soup.
