Watchmen - DC Animated Movie

To me if Ozzy was an animal he’d either be a fox or a snake. Almost reminiscent of Kaa from Jungle Book. A sense of grace and sensuality to lure people in.

A slightly more effeminate Patrick Bateman. If I was to guess Ozzy was modeled after the 1980s NYC Yuppies especially those who put on an aura of elegance to heighten their self-aggrandizement.
Patrick Bateman isn't far off honestly. Patrick was modeled after Tom Cruise which is who I would have cast as Ozy in the Gilliam adaptation that never happened.

I’d say it depends on what Tom Cruise.

If Ethan Hunt or Maverick, no.

If the caricature of the real Tom Cruise, from interviews, yes. He basically probably is exactly that, particularly for Scientology; I wouldn’t be surprised if dark secrets come to light about him post mortem there.

Really don't get how J. Michael Straczynski still has fans after what he did to Spider-Man.

Sigh... I really want to like what I'm seeing but I can't get over this choice of animation.

The art direction is good, even very good. If you freeze-frame, the images are superb, retaining Gibbons' style, with a nice color palette, beautiful lighting effects and even a little grain in the lines to keep something organic... But in motion, it just looks like a video game.
And it seems a bit inconsistent. While the shots of the fight scene seem rather dynamic, even fluid, that Doug Roth's face comes off as quite stiff, almost inexpressive... I don't know.

Again, I can feel how dedicated the people behind that project are, but I just can't shake the artificial feeling I'm getting from the footage.

I’m watching it now. It’s fine. Not a fan of the Telltale-esque animation (though I did love that Batman game).
It feels very rushed. This first part isn’t even an hour and a half.
I do like how they included the Tales of the Black Freighter comic.
Some good voice acting, but really not a fan of the voice for Dr Manhattan.

I know some have issues with the live action film, but I will definitely be sticking with that adaptation in the future. I don’t consider myself much of a Snyder fan, but I do really love the Watchmen film, even if it does look a little more “flashy” than what the book initially intended.

I really enjoyed the Snyder film. I'll still check this out, but my expectations were already kinda low for it. I also was not a fan of the choice of animation style.

Yeah, to be honest, I’ll probably completely forget about this very soon and will not be waiting in anticipation for part two.

I am fine with adaptations in different types of media, but this adds literally nothing. I’d rather just read the book or watch the movie.

The sound design (score, sound effects, mixing) is excellent in this. That's the real standout for me. The voice acting is probably the worst part of the film - The Comedian and Rorschach sound so try-hard. Just bad casting.

The animation honestly is better than I expected, although I would have preferred it to be strictly 2D. I like what they did with the structure of the story, it works a little better as a film than Snyder's movie. Also, in comparison to Snyder's version, they did a more effective job of establishing Rorschach as someone we shouldn't get behind. They include the graphic novel scene where Rorschach goes to a bar, pointlessly breaking a random guy's hand for information on The Comedian's death. Immediately after that scene, Rorschach mentions that he leaves the "human cockroaches to discuss their heroin and child pornography" - which establishes his morphed view of regular people. The screenwriter did a good job with this, placing these moments early enough to influence our understanding of the character.

Overall, I really like the sound design on this, but the CGI animation and voice acting prevent it from being something truly remarkable.

Can you talk a bit about the choice of the style of the project, which looks like cel-shaded CG-animation?

As we set out to adapt the book, there was just no question that we were going to do our best to adapt Dave Gibbons’ style into animation: His style is known for a lot of hatch lines on it, and that was something that we didn’t wanted to strip away, but that’s what you do in 2D. Generally you’re subtracting lines, you’re not adding them. So, the challenge was, how can we keep those lines?

We did explore 2D originally, and we tried some in-house testing with those “Gibbons lines,” as we called them. We also talked to some 2D animation studios, but ultimately we came to the conclusion that doing it in a 2D medium would just not work out well for us. We felt it would be much too difficult within our time constraints to do beautiful smooth animation on all of those amazing Gibbons lines. 3D animation became the best option to create texture maps of those lines and keep even the texture of the comic-book page as Dave would pull those lines. We wanted the ragged edge to those inclines, and that that’s something that’s difficult to capture in 2D; but in 3D we can map those textures onto 3D figures and preserve those comic-book textures that we wanted to preserve in the experience.

Which studio produced the animation?

It was Studio Mir [in Seoul, S. Korea]. We had worked with them before in 2D, They helped us with Young Justice, a series I wrote and produced with my co-producer, Greg Weissman. We were very familiar with them and really trust them as they have some amazing artists. We felt very lucky that they were on board. It was a kind of material and filmmaking that I don’t think the studio had approached before, but we had a lot of great discussions about it and they really rose to the challenge

This was better than I thought it would it be, but I still think this could have been something truly great. The overall score and the great sound design really elevated this for me because everything else was all over the place.

The voice acting/animation was super inconsistent IMO, but I did enjoy some of the voice acting like the guy they got for Edward Blake/Comedian and Katee Sackhoff as Laurie or Troy Baker as Adrian.

I like Titus Welliver alot as an actor, but he was really rough here as Rorschach. He sounded better as Walter Kovacs but I just couldn't get over how bad his Bale Batman voice was at times.

Say what you will about Snyder's film, but Jackie Earl Haley really nailed that character. I know it wasn't entirely accurate to the graphic novel, but it just made for a better moviegoing experience IMO.

I'll still check out Part 2 though.

I also thought the voice actor for Manhattan was a bit of a mixed bag compared to Billy Cudrup or Yayha Abdul Mateen II. When he was speaking calmly, he sounded okay, but when he gets angry during the television interview, I felt he was lacking the intensity needed for the scene.

Also, is it just me, or did Welliver seem to be saying his lines really fast at times?

I'll probably just wait until both parts are on Max to check them out, more out of curiosity than anything.

Was Bryan Cranston not available for Rorschach? Go watch him in Breaking Bad. He'd be the perfect Rorschach, both live action and animation.

Doubt he's unavailable, but more than likely changing his number every time one of these offers slips through.

The DC DTV movies are typically between 70 and 80 minutes. This has been a studio mandate since Batman Beyond Return of the Joker. Doesn't make it OK, but it's why it is what it is.

It wasn’t horrible, but it felt a bit rushed in eighty two minutes. I noticed some bits of dialogue were removed or truncated like Rorschach’s narration throughout the film. For the most part, J. Michael Stracynski did a decent job adapting the novel and its characters. I even liked that Tales of the Black Freighter was incorporated, same with bits of Under the Hood and Janey Slater’s interview during the credits.

The animation was a mixed bag, I enjoyed the colour palate and some shots looked great, while other shots just looked meh.

The voice acting was also a mixed bag. I thought Katee Sackhoff, Matthew Rhys, Troy Baker, Rick D. Wasserman all sounded good as Silk Spectre, Nite Owl, Ozymandias and Comedian. Michael Cerveris also sounded good as Manhattan, but lacked the intensity needed during the television interview.

Titus Welliver was also a mixed bag as Rorschach, sometimes he sounded good, but most of the time, he sounded like he was speaking his lines too quickly a lot, showed too much emotion as the character and that voice just sounded forced. He sounded much better in the Crimebusters flashback and as Walter Kovacs.

Also really dug the score and sound design as others have mentioned.

Will watch Chapter II, but can’t help but feel disappointed especially with the comic and HBO series.

I’d probably give this a 7/10.

Either way, I don't think they could have afforded Cranston. This doesn't seem to have that kind of budget.

I wasn’t a fan of the voice for Manhattan. I get that the character is a bit removed from humanity, but he sounded way too robotic at times. Crudup had that monotone voice, but still had a tinge of emotion behind it.

And once Crudup had to emote as Manhattan, it lead to the most unintentionally hilarious moment of the entire movie.
