Zack and Deborah Snyder, the husband-and-wife directing/producing team behind the upcoming Watchmen movie, told SCI FI Wire that the film's final length hasn't yet been approved, but that it is getting shorter.

"We're getting really close," producer Deborah Snyder said in a telephone interview on Nov. 18. "We're at two hours and 35 minutes."

Director Zack Snyder added: "The movie's pretty long ... compared to 300, which was an hour and 58 minutes. The director's cut [of Watchmen] is about three hours and 10 minutes long. It has even more than the theatrical version as far as the detail that gets even closer to the graphic novel."

"The Black Freighter version of the movie that we're working on--which has the ins and outs of the Black Freighter comic book woven through it, with an animated version of the Black Freighter--will be about three hours and 40 minutes," Zack said. "So there's a huge epic version of Watchmen, which will probably come out after the movie's theatrical release, for hardcore [fans]."

2:35 is short? Pretty long if you ask me.

Actually, wasn't it shorter than this like 4 months ago? like 2:20 something?

No, it was close to 2:45 and before that, Snyder "guaranteed" 3 hours because "the book is so immense we can't fit everything we want into less than 3 hours".

fox would of made it pg13 2hrs and 10minutes and had viedt killed lol

Its a shame that its being cut shorter. Itll no doubt get a little bit shorter than this before release as well.

Its more of a shame that we wont get to see the 3 and half hour movie with the Black Freighter included at the cinema :csad:

It's a shame, but if it stays here (at this runtime) I don't think it's going to kill the movie. If it drops lower however... er... we'll see.

I hope cutting down the runtime won't hurt the storyline, but if we get the 3 hour 10 minute director's cut on DVD I won't care too much.

Well, we're getting a more than three hour director's cut. So it's fine. Though it will be interesting to see how this works out.

As long we have a long DC edition DVD, I'm okay with it. The same happened to LOTR.

Are there any other notable comicbook movies out there that have a separate director's cut? I know Dare Devil had one... and I know Spidey had some extra bull **** scenes in there. Anything else worth noting?

Even though it's been shortened, 2hrs, 35 mins is still a whole lot of time.

It just indicates how much they're going to pull off in this one movie.

Meh, only like 10 minutes cut. Now if they cut it to about 2 hours, then I'll be mad.

Just like Zack Snyder said, I'm personally more excited for the DVD than the theatrical release.

Sounds like a helluva run-time to me. We should all just be thankful that we're getting Watchmen on the big-screen at all, instead of some hackneyed, gutted corpse of the source material.

This a pretty long run time and yes if fox did have this the run time would be considerably shorter.

I'm quite interested to see the directors cut along with the Black freighter story line.

7 minutes is a very long time in a movie. I wonder what actually was cut, dialogue/plot scenes or that unnecessary, pointless extended prison fight sequence..

Yeah but, everytime they cut 10 minutes, that could be an entire scene/sequence they are getting rid of. Like someone's brief backstory :(

It's a necessary evil. There's just no way around it.

But 2h 35m is still one hell of a long runtime, so nothing to worry about.
