WB's 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' original script by J.K. Rowling - Part 2

At this point that means nothing, the Marvel brand is well established and sells itself. Dr Strange having a bigger opening than a Harry Potter film without Harry Potter (or most of the recognisable elements) isn't anything to be proud about IMO.

Get back to me when a Marvel property opens greater than James Cameron's next :o
Still the Harry Potter franchise.

I am fairly confident Beasts will make more than Strange... and in no way what so ever is that even important.

Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took in $6.76M yesterday at 4,144 theaters in its fourth day of release, teeing off what is expected to be a fantastic week at the box office.

Among first Mondays for a film in November, Fantastic Beasts’ bests that of 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ($6.6M), Doctor Strange ($6.2M), 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ($5.3M), and last year’s Spectre ($5.3M), sending its four-day cume to $81.2M. Yesterday, Fantastic Beasts benefited from 32% K-12 schools off, and 13% colleges being on break according to ComScore. Those numbers will hold today before increasing to 74% K-12 and 56% colleges out on Wednesday. On Thankgiving and Black Friday 100% will obviously be off for the holiday.

Newt Scamander Might Not Be Main Character in Fantastic Beast Sequels

David Heyman, the HARRY POTTER producer (who's also working on that warring cat movie), had this to say:

"I don't think [Newt will be at] the heart of all of them. I think he'll be part -- so will Tina, Queenie and Jacob...[But Dumbledore] and [BLACKOUT]Credence[/BLACKOUT] and Grindelwald, I think they will be the main players."

Not only that, but Heyman confirmed what we already knew: that a young(er) Dumbledore will be a major part of the next four sequels. It also seems that he's instead going to be main thrust of this new series of films from this point forward (leading up to Grindlewald and Dumbledore's epic duel in '45).

Umm. Okay. We all knew it was going to happen, but did Eddie know about this, haha?

Maybe and agreed.

The thing that kind of blows my mind is that Dr Strange will probably get more WW than MoS. Clearly SM is a bigger draw in the US/Canada market and Strange has more appeal OS. Captain America doesn't have much OS appeal either....ever wonder why???? :woot:

CA:TWS grossed 115 million in China. :oldrazz:

Probably.Theyve said they planned for sequels from the beginning but hadnt worked out how many films they would need so they said 3 then Rowling decided on 5 and Rowling has been saying she's been wanting to tell this story about Grindewald. It doesnt seem like something that has been a recent development. Redmayne was probably told what this was going to be when it was pitched to him.

At least this way he has even more opportunity to do other projects but can remain attached to this franchise. It might give him more career flexibility.

it's not necessary a bad for him - the franchise won't rest solely on him. i do think newt may be in all of them, just not a main character in all of them.

Yeah. It did well in China, but, even giving you that, CA isn't the international drawing card that FB/HP (and other Marvel characters) are.

And, to be fair, CA HAS improved OS; still, it lags many other franchises. TBH, if you are named "Captain America", your appeal (esp at the beginning) is likely to be centered around a certain geographical location (I'll leave it up to you to figure out which one that is :oldrazz: .....back at ya :cwink: ).

He'll move from being a main character to a supporting protagonist.

This movie was alright. Like a 7/10. There were things I really enjoyed and other things I didn't. It was definitely Rowling's first screenplay. Things that I could tell would play better in a novel didn't apply here. Structurally it was weird. I didn't know what the main story was. Was it about Fantastic Beasts or the whole thing with Credence? Those needed to converge sooner. Instead Newt isn't involved in that really until the third act. A third act that consists of a city being destroyed and the bad guy being defeated by people shooting beams of light.

And this movie was devoid of much awe and wonder. Newt's suitcase scene was some of the best stuff in the movie and where it was the only place that displayed it. The movie needed some goddamn color. There was a scene where it literally looked black and white or a muddled grey. I get the criticisms of the latter films being progressively darker in palette but at least it fit the increasingly darker tones of the stories. There was a purpose. Here there was no need for it. Being how this is a whole new world, we need to be amazed. Not just like we were in SS, but show off the magic of NYC for what it is. Rowling and Yates really missed a huge opportunity to take advantage of what magical NYC would have been like. A lot of it is pretty generic. Imagine a Rowling written Gatsby like party scene but with ****ing magic. But nope none of that. I do think they need to get another director. I'm over Yates. Get someone fresh. Inject some more life into it.

Which is a real testament to Columbus and Kloves for that first film which gets takes for granted now. It wasn't easy but they made it look it. They had to take Rowling's wonder and put it on screen and compared to this, you can see how much both were more in sync.

As for the characters, for the most part they were great. I enjoyed Redmayne as Newt but more in performance. The character is underwritten. We didn't know much about himself as a human being. Just his job which was more vague. However, Tina, Queenie and Jacob were such a joy. I loved the collection of characters this time around. Farrell as Graves was very good but the twist was a damn cop out. What a waste of a great actor. I get that twist has been done before in HP but that didn't work at all.

I don't give a **** about the next films since those will be pretty much what I feared: The Dumbledore show and a Grindelwald war and they're gonna go all Hobbit on it. Then they're gonna make Cursed Child and we're gonna have to sit through seven more of those movies.

I thought this was called Fantastic Beasts? What the hell are they gonna call them?

What if Newt is Harry's real father?
