Action-Adventure The 'Back To The Future' Appreciation Thread - Part 2

I know it'll never happen but I would love to see the Stoltz footage.

my fave 'bet you didn't know' is that in the end of part 3 the guys in the truck with Needles, each guy is played by an actor from 3 different era of Tannen goons, one was Biff's, one was Griff's and one was Bufford's ;) .

she was also the blonde lady that talks to you when you were in the waiting line of the BTTF ride which she did before she got the Pacific Blue gig

I was watching Part II and keeping a look at things in the future that actually happened

  • Video phone calls/conferencing
  • High gas prices
  • Cubs win a World Series
  • Collectible items from our era in an antique store
  • Being able to watch multiple TV channels at once
  • Numerous movie sequels
Those were easy predictions to make. A lot of that already existed. They completely missed the internet though and thought we'd all be using fax machines.

I never realized how problematic the first film is until I went to an anniversary screening with some kids. The climax of the movie involves a young man preventing his teenage mom from being raped at her high school prom. And then the rapist goes on to become her wacky neighbor. And this is all supposed to be a feel good comedy.

And Marty no longer has any shared memories with the rest of his family after changing the timeline, but at least he got a new truck.

Two things can be right at the same time lol

Yeah, that's one thing I've seen a lot of people point out - Marty no longer really knows his family. These aren't the same people he grew up with. And HE isn't the same Marty they know, either. You have to wonder how long he could fake things before they would realize something isn't right.

Marty definitely has some therapy after 3 when Doc has sailed off with Clara, Jules and Verne. He’s with his “new” family. He’s travelled to 1955, 2015 and 1885. He most likely becomes the new “Doc” and is a hermit that the town thinks is “a real nutcase” claiming he’s travelled through time, just waiting for Doc to come back and visit him.

Cue dramatic piano version of the Back to the Future theme...

Marty sitting in a corner, holding his head.

VO " It's problematic. My life was turned upside down"...

Marty screaming at an out of frame character: "MY LIFE HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME SINCE!! MY FAMILY HAS FALLEN APART!!!!"

BLACK SCREEN: THIS SUMMER...

Number plate spinning...

GO BACK...

Close-up-shot of Marty's eyes.

VO " I need to bring my parents back AS THEY WERE AND FIX MY LIFE. "

TO THE FUTURE.

Doc (off screen): " Great scott" , lays his arm on Marty's shoulder from off screen.

CUT TO BLACK.

Piano note.

VO ON BLACK SCREEN "We have to stop your father from saving your mother!"

BACK TO THE FUTURE: BACK TO THE ORIGINAL TIMELINE

CUT TO: Close up of CGI deaged George McFly.

Behind him appears a deaged CGI version of Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly.

CUT TO: Old Marty McFly - "Oh no, we've made a mistake!"

CUT TO BLACK

COMING SOON

I just rewatched Part II. It's still fascinating to me that the whole Part III teaser at the end remained in the movie after its theatrical run complete with the "Coming Summer 1990".

The Matrix Reloaded post-credit teaser for Matrix Revelations and the Avengers teaser that was the post-credit scene for Captain America First Avengers are still in their respective films.

Those are both after the credits though. The trailer at the end of Part II feels like it was tacked on to reassure the audience that the next one was coming out in a matter of months since that was still in the days before the internet where most people might not have been aware when Part III would be out.

I never thought of the first movie as particularly problematic. Obviously Marty's mom having the hots for him is a topic that some will find funny and some will find icky but I think the way it's played makes it more 'family friendly' and not very creepy. When she finally kisses him she has that reaction of "No something about this is wrong". Regarding Biff's behavior towards her I think that aggressive 'sex pest' character is definitely a relic of the past and we don't see it anymore but again he's played so over the top that it feels appropriate for the movie.

Now I would say the original is one of those 'lightning in a bottle' perfect films but the one gripe I would have with it is the ending. I think Crispin Glover had a very valid point that having the film end on the message that money equals happiness is a bit of a bummer. I think you can strip away that aspect of the ending and maybe what Marty changed was making his dad more confident in himself (standing up to Biff) meaning he's more confident in the future and the romance/marriage still has a spark to it, rather than being kinda dead like in the beginning of the film.

I believe they borrowed that idea from 1970s The Three Musketeers as they tease The Four Musketeers right at the end, of course which was already shot.

You’re right, without the ending, a lot of audiences weren’t even aware there would be a 3 and some pissed off at the time. Now, it’s expected, but then it was only Musketeers and Empire that ended in such a cliffhanger way.

As for keeping the preview in subsequent home video release, I’m a proponent of keeping whatever was there theatrically, so I think it’s kind of fun to set my mind back to 1989 watching that ending and being like “what!?” and “it’s already shot!”

I managed to get an Open Matte 35mm copy of each film. Now I have yet another version/excuse to watch them.

That's valid, I remember some people pointing this out when the movie was first released. The implication is that all they needed was money and the family's problems would all be solved. I would guess that Uncle Joey still went to prison, though...

On the other hand, I always found it interesting that Marty's better-off family still lived in the exact same lower-middle-class subdivision house that their poorer version did. Imagine if Marty had woken up and found a family of complete strangers in 'his' house, and he has no idea where his real now-prosperous family is now living!

LOL that's a very good point. I've always thought about how it's weird that Marty went back to a life that he had no memory of growing up in but never that they would more than likely be living in a much bigger house.

fyi I am pretty sure they are having more than one showing than 10 31. the website for my local IMAX theater outside of Buffalo has dates for that and a few days after hope it is the same for your regions I doubt some people are gonna miss Halloween for BTTF heck I am working on that date but if it was only gonna be on Halloween I would be sure to take that day off ha ha.
