I don't care what year it's from. I don't mind comedy but I would not prefer a parody. Also I'm not big on anime but if you think it's worth seeing I'll give it a chance.

Blade runner (the final cut) is the best you'll ever see.

here's a few:

Blade Runner
Alien/Aliens
Dune
Galaxy Quest
The Fifth Element
Renaissance
12 Monkeys
The Fly (Jeff Goldblum)
Back to the Future
Terminator 1 & 2

People are going to state the obvious so here are some obscure ones (though still absolutely great):

Gattaca
La Jetee
Stalker
Timecrimes
Primer (must-see)

The Thing
Brazil
2001
Total Recall
Mad Max 1 and 2
Scanners
Videodrome
The Last Starfighter
Predator
RoboCop

It took 8 post for someone to mention 2001: A Space Odyssey?
Terminator 1 and 2
The Matrix
You might not be mutch for anime (neither am I) but both Akira and Ghost in Shell are worth checking out.

In more recent years both District 9 and Moon were great.

Escape from New York is also pretty great.

On that note of Jon Carpenter movies, the The Thing is a must watch.

Children of Men is far underrated for its scifi aspects in my opinion. With the exception of its actual premise, the world and the advance of technology and culture it shows existing in the late 2020's is in my opinion the most realistic view of the future I've ever seen in a film.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a definite must.

AI Artificial Intelligence

Minority Report is great.

Wrath of Kahn

Jurassic Park

I cannot justifiably leave off ET

At the very least the original Planet of the Apes

Frankenstein and even more so on the sci-fi front, The Bride of Frankenstein

Also, I don't think A Scanner Darkly can ever get enough credit. I think a lot of people are put off by the rotoscoped style.

Not a film, but seasons 1, 2, 3, and 5 of the Twilight Zone are all on Netflix Instant watch if you have it. Seriously some of the best sci-fi in the business.

Also, not usually mentioned because it's considered a horror film, but John Carpenter's "The Thing".

Wow, can't believe I forgot Children of Men. One of the greatest movies ever imo. That film just has it all.

Here are some that I consider "must see"

1. Star Wars (all 6 films)
2. Star Trek: Wrath Of Khan
3. Star Trek: First Contact
4. John Carpenter's: The Thing
5. Flash Gordon
6. The Last Starfighter
7. The Black Hole
8. Tron
9. Terminator
10.Terminator 2
11. Minority Report
12. Independence Day

You consider the prequels as must see? Not criticizing just asking.

It is absolutely great. As much as it was nice to see Scorsese get some oscar gold for the Departed, I honestly think this movie deserved both best director and film that year.

They're part of the entire saga, regardless. I've got no problem with them, except JarJar's character.

Jar Jar Binks was annoying.

Lost in Space
Star Trek(2011)
Tron:Legacy
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

Rollerball is an odd beast, extremely dated but still absolutely awesome.

You know what? I'm going to say it: Real Steel is a great movie that deserves to be seen in theaters. Of any of the movies currently in theaters, it is indeed a 'must see'.

Also, others may disagree, but I have had an undying adoration for Starship Troopers since I first saw it when it came to vhs. And on the topic of Verhoven, Robocop is a must see.

Last year's Monsters is a low budget piece of sci-fi goodness.

I agree with you on that.

I can't believe I left off these from my list:

Predator
A.I.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
E.T.
Soylent Green
Escape From New York
Alien
Aliens
The Running Man
Battle Beyond the Stars
Gremlins
Tron Legacy
Jurassic Park
The Final Countdown
Soldier

Most of mine have already been said, but oh well:

1.) Blade Runner (The Final Cut)
2.) Brazil
3.) 12 Monkeys
4.) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
5.) Children of Men
6.) Metropolis
7.) Alien
8.) E.T.
9.) Minority Report
10.) Gattaca
11.) Close Encounters of the Third Kind
12.) Star Wars (the original trilogy) - I consider these fantasy more than sci-fi, but whatever.
13.) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
14.) The Fifth Element
15.) Galaxy Quest
