I just watched Dead Space Downfall last night, and thought it was pretty cool, it was super gory and while the animation wasn't the best it was a pretty awesome movie I thought. I've also seen Akira and Ghost in the Shell which I guess fall into the sci-fi genre.

So can anyone help me out with some things to watch? Specifically I'd like to see a movie set in space like Dead Space, but sci fi on Earth or a planet is fine too. Oh, and I don't mind if it's anime style or regular animation. And preferrably r rated.

Cheers guys.

There are all kinds of anime that fit what you're looking for. Also, I know Halo Legends recently came out. It's an anthology of tales from the Halo universe and some of them are set in space.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie is really good and doesn't require you to watch the show first.

Fantastic Planet
Gandahar

Of course, Star Blazers and anything of the Macross persuasion

Thanks for the help guys, I'm thinking more modern stuff though.

Renaissance. Its a cg film in black and white and it stars Daniel Craig. Give it a shot.

Star Trek
Terminator
iRobot
Toho Godzilla

All make sense to start off with.

I said animated man.

Renaissance is "almost" like an anime and it is an ok/good movie.

Anyway, you may have a look at Wondefull Days ( anime ) or a the TV show ( cell shading ) Skyland.

Aeon Flux
Check out the shorts first. If you don't them, there's no way you'll like the series. Very avante garde, but very different. Also check out Dark Fury directed by Peter Chung and his segment of the Animatrix.

Excellent advice !

Also, Afro Samurai ( the first one ) is very good animation wise ( the story is OK ), the second one is not as good as the first one IMO but still more than watchable.

I know that some people like to diss it, but Titan A.E. is my second favorite Don Bluth movie (with my favorite being Secret of NIMH).

Also, while not straight sci-fi film The Iron Giant has a sci-fi theme and is such a darned good movie that everyone really ought to watch it anyway.

Steamboy is from the director of Akira. The story is kind of unfocused, but it's such a darned fun movie and looks so friggin' pretty that I didn't really care.

Green Lantern: First Flight is pretty fun, too.

And Clone Wars! Gotta have Clone Wars!

Not sure how in tune this is with what you're looking for, but I very good recent sci-fi anime film is Paprika.

It's a pretty surreal experience, not sure what to compare it to. It looks kind of like what little we've seen from the upcoming Inception movie(reality bending kind of stuff). I love it, personally, but just don't expect a very 'typical' movie, I guess.

Something that may be more in tune with the other is Armitage The Third:

It's has some mild similarities to Ghost in the Shell, and has some nice action scenes. It deals a lot with cyborgs and identity. If you like it there's a sequel you can check out, as well.

There's more I could recommend, but those are the ones that come to mind that may match more to what you're looking for

You got to admit this was a good movie for Disney even it was an updated version too.

This was a movie before the series.

Even though this did not feel like you typical FF story, it is a good scifi stand alone story.
