What is the scariest movie of all time...

There is one movie that sounds so terrifying I have never watched it....Calendar Girls.

I've heard of that one...sounds freaky as hell. I think they had to alter the ending because an old man had a heart attack during the screening and died soon afterward. That film is legend.

The Haunting (1963). No film even comes close.

You want something that'll scare you senseless? Here it is. This is the sort of movie that'll scare you so badly that even watching it in a room full of people, in a bright and sunny lit room with birds chirping in the background won't take away from its sheer horror.

I wonder if people going swiming really slow down after Jaws came out?

There's a lot of films that have truly scared me over the years. I'm quite glad to see Worthy provide Halloween as one of the essential horror films.

For me there's a vast amount of horror films that have made me quite uneasy, whereas even to this very day I still get creeped out.

The original Amityville Horror scared me so bad that I slept with the lights on(no lie) for the next two days. Everything about it was perfect with its subtle use of sounds, images, and atmosphere aspects that put the viewer on such a edge that it left me feeling cold. The scene with the priest being attacked by the flies along with the voice telling him to "Get Out" is creepy.

The first Nightmare on Elm Street comes to mind too. Freddy's introduction with the way his arms stretched out and the way he chased his victims made me shudder.

I'm sure others will disagree with me on this notion, however, I have to say the first Final Destination was very good and a great original concept. That film made me very paranoid afterwards.

But for the rest of the scariest films of all time here is my list:

1. Amityville Horror/Nightmare on Elm Street(tie)
2. Halloween
3. The Exorcist
4. Psycho
5. Audition
6. Black Christmas(Original)
7. When A Stranger Calls(Original)
8. Phantasm
9. Hellraiser
10. Rosemary's Baby
11. The Omen
12. Blair Witch Project
13. Texas Chainsaw Massacre(Original)
14. Pumpkinhead
15. Poltergeist
16. Misery

I've seen alot of horror filsm. Some sick, bloody and twisted. But the only film that's ever really scared me is The Blair Witch Project. After seeing that movie I was up all night for a week with the lights on.

JAWS because it actually took a real element and made people think twice before going into the water. How many people have gone out into the ocean and started humming the JAWS theme to scare someone or freak someone out? Scary stuff because yea a shark just might swim up and bite/eat you

that thing is the scariest part of the exorcist for me. what the hell is it?

Its the face of Pazuzu the demon that possessed Reagan.

But i find that to be the most frightening thing in the film, the rest i just find disturbing and creepy. But stuff like Possession, Demons and The Devil just freak me out.. but strangely interest me greatly.

i think this is the one thread on the boards where yyou dont have to put (original) next to 'when a stranger calls.

man that movie is scary a hell.

anyone seen 'last house on the left'.... supposed to be one of the scariest movies ever, and i could see who its really disturbing but the end is odd and not, what i would call scary.

honestly i was pretty dissappointed with both the Exorcist and Halloween.

if your one of those ppl who associate scary with gore (which in all honesty you shouldnt) i HIGHLY recommend Dead-Alive.

YES! 'Dead Alive' is brilliant! I was the baby zombie for Halloween a million years back. Sadly, no pics, but trust it was f-ing sick.

I love Dead-Alive, but like Sean of the Dead, it is a really a comedy. It is gorey but not at all scary.
BTW, I'm not a fan of gore horror movies because gore doesn't scare me...it disgust me, but doesn't scare me. So needless to say, I'm not a slasher fan for the most part.

Screw swimming! As a little kid if someone started humming that John Williams famous tune, I couldn't let my feet dangle off the damn bed!!....cause, ya know, carpet shark may get you.
I watched Jaws recently, and that movie still holds up so well.

Didn't find Exorcist all that scary, but I can't help but get utterly freaked out whilst watching the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Especially near to the end, where's she's all watching them eat...and you've got that granddad fellow. Freaky stuff. It being loosely based on that Ed Gein guy didn't help, either...added the element of realism. Ugh.

the only scary part of the blair witch project was the part with the fat guy with no shirt on

The real reason Halloween is so terrifying is that it doesn't feel like you're watching a movie at all. You aren't watching Jamie Lee Curtis getting stalked by this seemingly superhuman guy in a mask, you're watching a helpless teen and her friends getting terrorized by an unstoppable force. And it all takes place in a town that's relatable to many, many people, which makes this movie all the more plausible.

Most of the people who found the Exorcist scary are religious people…

ditto... im an atheist, and i dont think its scary AT ALL... but i can see how it would be insanely scary if you had a slightly different view of religion.

regardless, its a good movie.
