What next for the WWE, does it have a reason to exist?

I have never been it's biggest fan. I don't enjoy it's "stories", I believe it promotesbullying and many morally questionable ideas. In the light of the steroid linked deaths and the Benoit murder/suicides is it time this "sport" is no longer seen as entertainment.

The UFC for instance provides real gladitorial spectacle, without the ludicrous soap opera. It has a far more wholesome image and promotes sportsman like behaviour for the most part, as does pro boxing which is also real. I ask you WWE, what is it's point?

You need to watch the programming a little more closely. While you see it "promoting" bullying and many moral questionable ideas...many times what the storylines and the "characters" are portraying are the ridiculousness of society and how those things "AREN'T" good by showing a tongue in cheek representation of it.

While the UFC is real fighting...have you watched these preview shows for upcoming fights? It IS the same as the WWE only these guys are REALLY wanting to hurt each other. That UFC reality show. How is that not a soap opera too? There is sportsman like behavior but I've watched a lot of fights and there IS unsportsmanlike behavior in the sport. And BOXING? Come on, boxing is probably one of the most dirty sports in all of the sports, haha. Fixed fights. Pay offs. Come on, man.

Thats why people LIKE professional wrestling because it's tongue in cheek and it makes FUN of things. While on the surface you may think "Oh my God, this is overly sexual or this is so over the top" but it's MAKING FUN OF SOMETHING IN SOCEITY.

Mick Foley put it best in the title of his second autobiography. "And The Real World is Faker Than Professional Wrestling" Hahaha.

Maybe I'm wrong but I tend to think that WWE and WWF and all that is for really stupid people. I mean seriously.

I agree with the thread starter. Wrestling is so fake, and they act like idiots the way they scream at each other. And I also think it promotes bullying, smashing beer cans with your forehead and other idiotic behavior.

So people who just want to kick back and have a good time are "stupid", huh? Seriously? So, I mean if I want to take, oh say, an 8 year old little boy, who's dying wish is to see his favorite professional wrestler, and just to have a great time. That's stupid? That's little 8 year old boy is stupid?

First of all, you're a giant stick in the mud. If you took the time to watch the programming and to understand the nature of what the show is...you'd start to notice that there is a pattern to it all. That while these guys are acting and these guys have predetermined outcomes to their matches...there is an ART to what they do. And there is a respect that one comes to have for these men and women and for what they do.

Most of these storylines and most of these characters are SUPPOSED to be over the top. It's entertainment. If all the wrestlers just stared blankly as they walked down the aisle with no charisma or emotion...what kind of CRAP is that? People want flash and pazzazz. THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE BULLYING. That's part of the show. It's a RELEASE for people. They go to a show or watch it on television and see the "good guy" beating up the "bad guy" and people feel better about themselves. For a fleeting moment they forget that their lives suck because of a wrestling program.

But, Ok, they're STUPID because it's not HIGH BROW entertainment that YOU'RE used to, right? Haha. Get out of here with your holier than thou attitude. :oldrazz:

No I'm not. Guys look up to them and figure "I have to act stupid and tough, because it's the manly thing to do."

HAHAHAHA!!! Are you serious? Maybe like a 12 year old kid looks up to John Cena or something, or wears his T-shirt and says all his little catch phrases. But adults? Wanting to be JUST LIKE John Cena? Ummm...doubtful.

Maybe they want to have his build or have sex with the women he's having sex with. But, come on, you really seem to be basing your opinions on just maybe a few experiences or a few people you've met.

Not EVERY wrestling fan represents how ALL the fans act. There are dumb hick wrestling fans. Just like there are dumb hick people in just GENERAL LIFE. Most times though you'll find highly intelligent, hard working people just wanting to have a good time with their families or their kids.

It's entertainment. Just because you don't "get it" or "like it" doesn't mean that it's stupid.

But I guess it must be nice walking around with your nose in the air and anything that YOU don't like is beneath you but if someone doesn't like something of yours they are "stupid". I bet that's the type of person you are. And, boy, I'm GLAD you're not a wrestling fan then.

I'm more of a boxing fan

UFC fighters grapple to much and punch to little

"Stupid people" is an opinion.

I didn't say "all." I said many. Part of why I feel that way is whenever I see it I just cringe at the cheapness of it.

so what? that doesn't mean children think they are going to be evil spirits.

I think the human race is quite often ignorant and headed for extinction.

A lot of time feminists have good points. Stastically speaking all over the world, women are less likely to commit acts of violence, support war, or support the death penalty then men.

And a lot of men do that. How could you not know that? What have you been living under a rock your whole life?

Have YOU been living under a rock your whole life?

You think the human race is quite often ignorant and headed for extinction. Hmmm. Isn't that what you're doing right now? Being ignorant? Not comprehending what is being said to you is more like it. You're being told, and once again by me, that's it's entertainment. It's not HIGH BROW like the highly intelligent people you associate with like so that means you have to pass judgement on it because you refuse to understand it.

Do you not realize that there are a lot of people in this world and they like certain things...and they may NOT like the things that you like? Maybe all they do is use their brain and work hard all day and want to unwind with something that will make them LAUGH. But you'd rather not try and understand that, right? You'd rather just call someone STUPID when they like something you think is "cheap".

In America, at least I think you're an American, we have freedom of choice. You have the freedom to NOT choose to watch the prgram. And all these "stupid" and "cheap" people have the right to CHOOSE to watch it. You don't want to understand what the show is about and maybe find a respect for what the people do in the industry? Fine. But don't insult people over their personal choices. THAT is ignorant. THAT is cheap. And THAT is exactly what's wrong with this country today. Too many people telling you what IS right and what IS wrong and they're too busy to see that their OWN lives are MORE screwed up than the people they are DICTATING to.

Um, you should rely less on stereotypes and realize that these wrestlers still believe in body building. They don't get their bodies because of steroids alone. In fact, Triple H wrote a book on the subject a few years ago. And um, you missed the point because there are many people who have accused music of promoting violence in the past. You suggested that because of Chris Benoit and his actions, WWE should no longer be considered a form of entertainment. Should Rock & Roll no longer be considered a valid form of entertainment because Jim Gordon (Who wrote Layla with Eric Clapton) and went on to smash his mother's head in with a hammer? The same thing applies here. How about Kurt Cobain, who suffered from Heroin addiction and blew his brains out the back of his skull? Chris Benoit's actions and death was tragic but it doesn't change the fact that the WWE was and still is entertainment. That is the point of the WWE.

*applauds*

Quoted for truth.

WWE is ******ed, and from what I've met, so are the audience who watches it at home.

And the most ignorant statement of the year goes to...Majik1387. Your award is to be sent to Stamford, CT where you will be forced to sit in the WWE main offices and watch the history of professional wrestling...for an ENTIRE YEAR!!!!!

So most intelligent people agree the WWE is ludicrous and it's adult fans are ******s, nice to know. My faith in humanity is restored.

Wow, what thread were you reading. Hopefully this was sarcasm. I've got a genius level IQ and I've watched professional wrestling since I can remember. Back in the early 80's right before the big boom of Hulk Hogan.

The industry has gone through a lot of cosmetic changes but the spirit remains the same. And your ignorance of the wrestling business, the people who have bleed and died to make it a great business, and the fans who just want to have a good time is sickening at this point.

I remember Whirlysplat now. The same poster that, purposely, egged people on into a debate because he was bored. I believe that it was about whether or not Rugby players were tougher than American Football players or something like that. And went on about how American football is for wimps because they wear pads.

Basically he was doing the same thing there that is going on here. Purposefully stating a biased opinion so people freak out. The mods should have just banned him, but that's their call.

Reading this thread definitely made me feel a whole lot better about myself. It must be nice, in a way, to live in that kind of ignorance and to truly feel that you're smarter than everybody you meet.

Jeez, what a feeling that must be! Haha.

Well considering that his whole point seems to be to slyly *cough* slander wrestling fans I think it's obvious he's trolling. He always trolls and then acts like he's not, if he was half as clever as he thinks he is he wouldn't have gotten a temp ban.

It's also funny that he talks like he has a huge exciting life and we're losers for arguing with him or because of post counts, and then he stays on to keep arguing.

Which is more pathetic tho, the guy who watches wrestling and enjoys himself having fun, or the guy who thinks he's better than the wrestling fan and spends hours on a chat board ranting on wrestling to belittle those who watch it.

Whirly has done nothing but make an ass of himself as always, and meanwhile he thinks he's gotten some huge triumph getting everyone upset like he led us all like pawns on a chessboard, but not realizing he's the butt of the joke himself. Heck, he's even been known to follow ppl around from thread to thread just to troll on them, to me that's the epitome of having no life. This thread never had a point to begin with, he just saw an opportunity with the Benoit death to troll some more and get ppl riled up.

back from probation and already being an ignorant child. didnt learn a thing huh

Umm, you're about fourteen I suspect, you didn't even realise things are spelt differently in the U.K. I see you go straight for the personal comments again, amusing "junior". This is just a tip, telling people you're old and having a post count of over thirty a day, might indicate a number of things. Firstly you have no job. Secondly your job is at a phone call center, where you actually do so little you can post all the time or thirdly you have no social life. Pick any one of the three, the cap fits. The most likely though is that you're option four and still at school. I suspect even your parents don't listen to you because you're boring, so you spend your life posting to the masses on this message board. Those of us with jobs and lives could never post 30 messages a day. O.K. junior? Finally just a tip, a small item of advice, an attempt to reach out to you in your attempt to sound "grown up" online, "punctuation is your friend". Didn't you learn anything at school today, huh?

WWE is ******ed, and from what I've met, so are the audience who watches it at home.

An interesting point of view.

Another interesting post.

I agree with the thread starter. Wrestling is so fake, and they act like idiots the way they scream at each other. And I also think it promotes bullying, smashing beer cans with your forehead and other idiotic behavior.

I could find lot's more like those posts in this thread, this one though says it all, if the WWE is to continue then it needs to do as this poster says.

the wwe needs to clean up its act

Heh. Funny. Telling someone in the Army he's 14. Awww you're such a cute Troll Whirlysplat. Such a cute twolly wooly. ^_^

Heh. Funny. Telling someone in the Army he's 14.

You call yourself Armydragon92A, the 92A probably stands for 1992/April, your birthday? Sorry fourteen was harsh when you're probably fifteen, given your birthdate. You have thirty posts a day so if you are in a platoon the guys must have lot's of fun around you. However, i'm unsure if that game i've seen advertised titled "Call of duty" really counts as the army. That is anywhere but on a web forum. 30 posts a day you must be the American first (on)line of defence.

While the UFC is real fighting...have you watched these preview shows for upcoming fights? It IS the same as the WWE only these guys are REALLY wanting to hurt each other.

Some times. Some of them show really good sportsmanship, and act professional. I think Chuck Lidell acts professional, but I don't watch it all the time, so I might have missed some unprofessional behavior here and there. Some of them act like 10 year olds, and it does anger me.

That UFC reality show. How is that not a soap opera too? There is sportsman like behavior but I've watched a lot of fights and there IS unsportsmanlike behavior in the sport.

Yeah. You see totallly childish crap in that. These guys totally disregard the impact they may be having on people. I think Wrestling mostly has a bad impact on little kids, but the UFC probably has more of a negative impact on teenagers or young adults.

LMFAO...you think 92A stands for the year 1992, and April? This is hilarious if for the irony and nothing else.

You know for how much you try and insult the intelligence of others you took a pretty good stretch of imagination to reach that conclusion. I mean if you're trying to pick him apart because of his post count, and are trying to deduce that he's 14 don't you think it would common sense for him not to put his birth date in his name which is an age not allowed in the army? It's like saying your a girl, and then making your name Dude1.

92A is a fairly well known term, it means Automated Logistical Specialist. If you're going to insult the guy, as you have wrestling fans and several others here, atleast google or wiki something first before you take a blind leap of logic and grasp at straws to insult someone, you just end up looking like an ass otherwise. Also if you're going to insult ppl and say they have no lives, what does it say for you when you follow ppl around the boards here just to insult them, and create a thread with the entire goal being to put down something you don't enjoy. Most ppl would just not watch wrestling, they wouldn't rush to a chat board to make a post on how it should be demolished and what you think of it's fans...if you had as much of a life outside this board that you say you do atleast. And if you do, then it might speak on your mental stability to take so much pleasure in starting arguments, and trolling on others, and insulting ppl on personal levels over the internet based on next to nothing.

I wish a mod would just close this, it hasn't been on topic for awhile, and is just basically an excuse for whirly to troll without it being blatantly obvious enough to earn him another temp ban, or permanent one.

Just to let you know, other than the first line, all of that is Spider-Bite's words, not mine. Hopefully you caught that.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of wrestling. I always thought the idea and clothing made it a little too gay for me, but who the hell cares? People like it, it entertains and that's it's point. Instead of stereotyping everyone who likes something in some category for an utterly pointless reason of needing to be superior in some way I don't see what people are upset with wrestling over.

Does it inspire violence? Sure but only in violent people and no more than a million other things we encounter every day. Don't we have a war going on?

Do some wrestlers take steriods and do terrible things? Yep, but I can say the same thing for any other sport or competition in existence.

If you look at the percentage of wrestlers who've acted anywhere near Beniot and compare them to the rest you're gonna find something very interesting. It's the same as average everyday people and their inclinations towards violence and drugs. It's a wash.

Last point. If anyone thinks the wrestling audience is stupid because of what they like to watch for mindless entertainment then I'm sure they'd agree the same about anyone who goes to the movies, or reads comics, or does anything else that doesn't have a direct "educational" and "wholesome" value.

Obviously an american term, it's as ironic as him not realising generalise is spelt with an "s" in the U.K. I do think it's hilarious anyone is so insecure they would give the job they wish to have people think they do as their user name. I guess you use Ronald Mcdonald for the same reason?

You make some good points then spoil it at the end, because, of course the percentage of wrestlers who behave in extreme ways is higher than the rest of the population.

The final paragraph makes no sense, because most comics have a very wholesome message e.g. "With great power comes great responsibility", "Truth, Justice and the American way". I'm not sure what the American way is but I think we get the point. As for movies it depends on the genre you watch. I would say my favourite movie, "The Shawshank Redemption", has a number of messages that are both educational and wholesome, despite the at times depressing subject matter.

Can you provide a source for this? What extreme behavior are the exhibiting?

Well let's just examine the percentage of drug linked deaths in the WWE to the number per capita in the general population of the US.

Here are some recent deaths.
• Chris Benoit, 40, died June 24, 2007: suicide; toxicology report ongoing.
• Sherri Martel (Sherri Russell), 49, died June 15, 2007: did not die of natural causes; toxicology report ongoing.
• Mike Awesome (Michael Alfonso), 42, died Feb. 17, 2007: suicide; unknown.
• Bam Bam Bigelow (Scott Bigelow), 46, died Jan. 19, 2007: arteriosclerotic heart disease; autopsy results showed that Bigelow's death was due to multiple drugs found in his system including toxic levels of cocaine and benzodiazepine (anti-anxiety drug).
• Eddy Guerrero, 38, died Nov. 13, 2005: arteriosclerotic heart disease; throughout his career, Guerrero encountered various substance-abuse problems outside of wrestling, including alcoholism and an addiction to pain killers. At the time of his death, he had recently used narcotic painkillers.
• Big Boss Man (Ray Traylor), 42, died on Sept. 20, 2004: heart attack.
• Malice/The Wall (Jerry Tuite), 36, died on Dec. 6, 2003: heart attack; he admittedly had a problem with substance abuse.
• Crash Holly (Michael Lockwood), 32, died on Nov. 6, 2003: overdose of painkillers.
• Road Warrior Hawk (Michael Hegstrand), 46, died on Oct. 19, 2003: heart attack; he had battles with alcohol and drugs throughout his career and was an admitted steroid user.
• Pitbull 2 (Anthony Durante), 36, died on Sept. 25, 2003: drug overdose on homemade Oxycontin.
• Miss Elizabeth (Elizabeth Hulette), 42, died on May 1, 2003: subsequent autopsy revealed Hulette died of an accidental drug overdose, having ingested some of the medications with vodka.
• Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig, 44, died on Feb. 10, 2003: a medical examiner's office declared acute cocaine intoxication the official cause of his death. His father said a lethal combination of steroids and painkillers contributed to his death.
• Public Enemy's Rocco Rock (Ted Petty), 49, died on Sept. 21, 2002: heart attack.
• British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith, 39, died on May 18, 2002: heart attack; an autopsy revealed past anabolic steroid use may have played a part in his death. However no certain reason was found. It is apparent that stress, serious injuries and the use of drugs took its toll on the wrestler.
• Terry Bam Bam Gordy, 40, died on July 16, 2001: heart attack.
• Rick Rude (Richard Rood), 41, died on April 20, 1999: heart failure; the believed cause of death may have been an overdose of Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and steroids. An autopsy report showed he died from an overdose of mixed medications. In 1994, he testified he had used anabolic steroids to build muscle mass and relieve joint pain.
• Louie Spicoli (Louis Mucciolo), 28, died on Feb. 15, 1998: overdose on Soma and wine, choking on his own vomit in his sleep; investigators found an empty vial of the male hormone testosterone, pain pills and an anxiety-reducing drug.
• Brian Pillman, 35, died on Oct. 5, 1997: arteriosclerotic heart disease; while he had a documented history of abuse of prescription drugs, an autopsy found that a previously undetected heart condition had led to his death.
• Eddie Gilbert, 33, died on Feb. 19, 1995: heart attack; he used steroids and cocaine.
• Buzz Sawyer (Bruce Woyan), 33, died on Feb. 7, 1992: heart attack.

That's 20 deaths over 15 years. How many women are raped per day? How many people are killed by drunk drivers? How many people OD on drugs? Yes, there's a problem with steroids in the WWF. There's also a problem with steroids in baseball, hey that Cardinals pitcher also died because he was drunk and possibly high earlier this year, does baseball have a place in society. I mean really it's pretty stupid, just a bunch of grown men playing catch.
