I rented Catch A Fire the other night, not a bad flick just the pacing was god-awful even by my standards but it had a great ending. Anyway when I rent a new flick, I get an old one free, so tell me folks what new and old film should I rent?
If only you had gotten here sooner Hunter I ended up renting Pirates of the Carribean 2 since I had not seen it yet and Black Sunday (1977). I happen to be perusing the isles of the older movies when I saw the title Black Sunday, for a moment I had mistaken it for Paul Greengrass' Film "Bloody Sunday", but judging by the cover I quickly figure out I was wrong since the cover art would place it in the 70s-80s catagory, anyway I had already picked it up and look at the year 1977, then the director... John Frankenheimer... Now loving the two other works I'd seen by John Frankenheimer, Manchurian Canidate and French Connection 2, I figure this was the movie for me!

Well i'll be interested to see what you think of the 2 you have rented in particular the Frankenheimer, movie as ive never seen that
Keep the other 2 in mind for next time
Blockbuster...pssssh! Netflix all the way baby. Been to a Blockbuster a handful of times in the two years I've been with Netflix. Probably didn't find what I wanted there.
I would say rent The Taking of Pelham 123, but BB probably doesn't have it. Great gritty 70s movie with one of the best, funniest, cleverist YET VERY SIMPLE endings in history. Mathau is/was the man.
New I would say Lucky Number Slevin. I enjoyed that.
Standard Frankenheimer, slow yet gripping. It's interesting watching this movie since it's about terrorism so I made the direct connection with 24. It's interesting since it takes a completely different approach than 24. 24 is pulse-pounding intensity that focusing on keeping you on the edge of your seat every minute, while Black Sunday takes it time, there is no immediate threat till the last 20-30 minutes of hte film. Instead of being right in the hot seat, 24 hours, this story takes place over a period of months. It starts with a raid of a terrorist organization and the finding out a terrorist group is planning something, all the way to the end of it's actual exectution,
it takes place on Superbowl Sunday
. Another thing about Black Sunday is how human the characters are, there are no hugely elaborate schemes here or getaways, this movie is a character study of the toll this war takes on a person's characters. You also really feel for the terrorists and how misguided they are. That's what I like about this movie, you understand why each character does what he does. It's also refreshing to see the no-non sense interogation, instead of prolong torture sequences, it's a simple gun to the head, either you talk or die. However there are a couple of drawbacks to this film, I love how Frankenheimer takes his time with a film to build up tension but on the same tolken, the last 30 minutes consists of them chasing the terrorists, a little too much. Secondly sometimes they make it far too easy for either the detective or the terrorists to do certain things. However the action scene at the end with the blimp would give 24 a run for it's money. All in All, a very solid thriller that I'll most likely revist.
Pirates of the Carribean 2
All right so I finally saw this film, my opinion? It was mediocre fodder made for money... Don't get me wrong it was very well made and the performances were decent, and they really did try... But the fact of the matter is, they were stretching what should of been the first act into a full movie so they could make tons of money, even the action scenes felt too long. Everything done in this movie in terms of character was done in the first one, and for hte most part it just had me saying... how can they be going over this crap again? However the parts with Will Turner and his father are good. In the end, I am excited for the next one because that seems to have a decent story. Like this entire movie really should of been the first act for the next film, seriously cut out all the crappy characterization and what you have? Just island hopping...
However, just like Superman Returns or any other movie with a fanbase, if it's made half-way decent I can understand how you could like it, because I'd be lying if I didn't say I didn't enjoy it. The effects are good and the performances are entertaining. However as a film, it's just not that great
