This is a relatively recent interview with Joh Favreau:

QUINT: So, I saw the poster... Red and Gold for the suit, yeah?

JON FAVREAU: Yeah, Red and Gold. We're going to start with the Grey and then we're going with the Red and Gold. I think we're going to go circular chest piece and we're definitely inspired by the Adi Granov stuff and he's actually working on the suit design with us.

QUINT: So, when you say "start with the grey," you don't mean a grey version of the Red and Gold suit, but the big, clunky dome thing, right?

JON FAVREAU: Yeah. We're going to go low-tech. We're going to have to believe that he built it in captivity.

QUINT: Will it look like his first appearance suit?

JON FAVREAU: Well, it's a... it's a... Look. It's going to be so hard... Just the idea that they just sort of brush over in the books, which is... instead of building a bomb, "While I was pretending to build a bomb, I built this war suit, this tech-armor." It's like, "What kind of bomb were you building that looked like that? With eye slits on it and arms." And then they snapped it together at the last minute. So, I think you gotta go pretty low-tech to help swallow that jagged pill.

^^^ Gray suit? I know that he has said time and time again that they are creating a different suit. Now, according to this interview, Jon says that they are going for a low-tech look. My hope is that the low-tech suit is only used for the escape and that once he gets back to his life, he will gain a new red n gold one.

Is that the case?

That's what I get from what he said. It's actually a pretty interesting way to take it, IMO.

as longs it doesnt look like the green goblins costume from spiderman Im fine.

they need to hire a crew from some HK Cinema or japanese filmmakers

^Um, I'd rather not see Iron Man doing martial arts.

He'll build the big, bulky gray armor to escape from captivity, then builds the more streamlined red and gold when he gets back to the states, which he'll wear for the duration of the movie.

Looking forward to see how they do the gray armor.... while obviously it has nowhere near the coolness-level of all the red and gold armors, I always really liked the gray armor's simplicity in design.

He is saying that the armor he builds to escape captivity will be a "version" of the gray armor but, disassembled, it won't look like a suit of armor (arms, eyeholes, etc). After he escapes he builds the red and gold which will closely resemble granov's work in IM comic. I am confident that the armor we get (red and gold) will be a heavy duty , high tech, metal-looking piece of equipment and not some vacuum formed plastic looking contraption ala GG or even the storm troopers in SW.

this could be finally a good movie, not really a hard comic character to adapt for the big screen like spider-man or hulk. basically you have this guy that builts an hitech armor and you can squeeze your brains and find a good original story, you can keep the factor that it serves to let him survive but when you say that you're going to follow all of what happens in the first comics and make the horrible clowny red and yellow armor from the early comics (i hope it will be far different from the one of the teaser poster) and a villain that is a kind of sorceror with magical rings i start to worry... i don't think foggy nelson is the right guy to make the film. i don't trust a guy that says he’s making a movie based on what the fans would like to see because the fans want to see a goddam living comicbook and it sux ..it means he's got no clear ideas of what to do...

Hopefully from something 'resembling' this (from Fav's comment's he may change it a bit): -

The moving to something like this :-

with little changes and nods to the classic armor (i.e round repulsar - beam chest plate):-
