What traditions does your family have during Christmas

By that I assume your whole entire family on your dad's side of the family shows up like grandparents? aunts? uncles? cousins?

All of my grandparents are dead on both sides, and most of my paternal family is in Ga. I'm in the Washington, DC area, so very small gathering.

My maternal family is enormous, and most are in the area. It's just easier to keep with the family I grew up with.

It makes sense then for you to spend Christmas with your mother's side of the family especially if they are closer to you but also if you are closer to them not only in distance but relationship wise too

So I am sure then that you guys probably have a huge Christmas feast

Will usually go to my folks house on Christmas Eve for dinner. Someone will typically read Night Before Christmas for the grandkids. It’s not your typical story though; it’s the Cajun version. It’s written with the Cajun dialect, which makes it fun to try and read aloud, and instead of reindeer, Santa as flying alligators. It’s a really fun book, and reading it has been a family tradition since I was a kid.

My mom and I watch Die Hard every Christmas Eve before getting ready for dinner.

We don't have a lot of traditions in our family for Christmas. It's just visit parents, open presents, eat Christmas dinner. That's pretty much it.

My family had some great traditions while I was growing up, but they've gone by the wayside. My wife and I have been working to start our own traditions now though. We always go to mass on Christmas eve with her side of the family, basically me, her, her parents, brother, aunt, uncle and cousins. On Christmas day, me and her exchange gifts for each other at our house, then go to her parents and give gifts. In the afternoon we'll usually go to my dad and stepmom's for dinner and gift exchange with my family. Afterwards depending how tired or not we are we'll meet up with her parents again, we spend more time with her side of the family because her brother comes in from the West Coast so time with him is at a premium.

My own personal tradition is I watch Its a Wonderful Life at 4pm start time on Christmas Eve.

Another timeless Christmas classic I wonder if you watch any other Christmas classics in your run up to Christmas Day like a marathon of sorts?

I usually watch some Christmas movies (Nightmare Before Christmas, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon in particular) as well as Christmas episodes of my favorite shows in the two weeks leading up to Christmas.

I go out every Christmas eve hoping to find a figgy puddin or a carol singer to eat. Sometimes Santa joins me for a chinwag and a quick whisky sandwich. I don't bother with Rudolphf anymore after the China town fiasco of 1922. So thats about it really.

Then I watch the Queens speech Christmas day with my family while we are all stuffing our greedy faeces with food grub.

Then if we are still awake and not crying too hard Doctor Who and things similar will be watched. If I have a lady friend at this time of the year she comes in very useful for working off the squirrell trifle and chockolat fage mulled products.

All in all it's a festival of arguing and hate and old grudges brang forth.

Roll on Halloween and let the bun fights be done with my hombres.

But at the end of the day it's all about Jesus and stuff aint it...

Peace be with you my friends, and also with you.

Well the key thing with figgy pudding is that you don't leave wherever you're at until you get some.

I'm hoping to start a tradition this year..
We watch the MST3k episode of Santa Clause Conquers the Martians.
It probably won't happen.

Definitely a great tradition if I do say so myself

I'm a fairly new father. My son is a year and a half. So last year we started our first family Christmas tradition. We went and picked out 3 hallmark Christmas ornaments. I picked out Superman. The wife picked out Charlie Brown. Then we got my son an Avengers ornament picture frame. This year we continued the tradition. I picked out Batman. The wife got a Snoopy and my son picked out a Mickey Mouse. Fun lil family Christmas tradition. Christmas Eve we visit some family but on Christmas Day we stay home relax and my parents come over around lunch time for a bit.

All of us have traditions in our families year after year especially when it comes to celebrating Christmas so I know I am curious to know what people's traditions are as far as family traditions go for Christmas? I will go ahead and start:

For Christmas in my family:

- Christmas Eve (December 24th)- On Christmas Eve night, my brother, sister and myself we go off with our father since my parents are divorced so we go to my grandmother's house for the 24th. At my grandmother's house usually my whole entire family is there at the house extended family on my father's side that being aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws all on my father's side since I have a pretty huge family. There are a lot of us like I am talking a lot and the house is usually packed every year. We usually party on the 24th in terms of dancing to music, eating, drinking the whole nine yards and at this party there is usually a lot of food. There is usually a lot of alcohol by that I mean wine and beer specificially. Also at the house my cousins who I am close in age with and I we usually just watch TV downstairs in the basement while music plays down there. My little cousins my younger cousins generally create lots of mischief on Christmas Eve especially in my grandmother's house you know how little kids can be. We usually party until the wee hours of the morning until everyone goes home.

- Christmas Day (December 25th)- On Christmas Day morning since I live with my mom, my brother, sister and myself along with my mother and grandmother my mother's mother we open gifts on Christmas Day morning downstairs. We also have breakfast with each other basically just spending time together as a family and my mother basically cooks up a storm on Christmas especially for us kids but also for my grandmother too she also helps my mother in the cooking. Meanwhile my little brother and I are generally competitive with each other in terms of playing video games with each other but also we spend the day watching NBA basketball before we have lunch with my sister, mother and grandmother. Then my brother, sister and myself spend time getting ready to go out with my father who basically comes to pick us up to go to my uncle my dad's brother's house for Christmas Day. Then when we do get to my uncle's on Christmas Day my whole entire extended family is at my uncle's house like I am talking my whole entire family again. My cousins and I then are in the living room as we all watch NBA basketball on a huge screen as we all go crazy. Meanwhile my aunts and uncles are basically dancing to music while everyone is eating Christmas dinner and my grandmother is also there too right in the thick of it.

- Boxing Day (December 26th)- Basically what goes on on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in my family basically it is a repeat again but we spend the day of the 26th at my aunt's house like think of a Christmas after party

- New Years Eve (December 31st)- As for New Years Eve my whole entire family and myself we spend it at any one of my aunts or uncles' houses it generally changes each and every year as far as whose house we celebrate it at but as for New Years we all basically just spend it counting down the hours to the New Year while we reflect on everything that has happened the past year and how we will make the New Year so much better than the last year. We generally hold hands while we do it and we basically pray too. After the New Year as soon as it is a reality we basically celebrate hugging one another and then we just go on about partying until the wee hours of the morning.

* This is strictly my tradition though since I come from an African family well I am Canadian too since I was born in Canada but have African ancestry, specifically Ghanaian

Merging with an already existing thread...

I am sure everyone has their family Christmas traditions some different than others hell even some similar but what matters what truly matters is all of us having the Christmas spirit and spreading that Yuletide cheer
