A mixed bag. It had such a promising start and it all goes downhill once they get to what the movie is really about. They do a great job setting up Germany post WWII and seeing all the conflicts that comes with it with the British Army. The production design plus the cinematography and just having it be filmed with real snow and with real environments added a lot. I thought the three main leads did a great job performance wise despite what they were given. The movie ultimately crashes the moment the movie became a love triangle melodrama. It's predictable and it's got full of cliches that cheapens the story and the time period they're in. This could have been so much more about identity politics and post war trauma but they chose to keep it in the background. Overall, I don't think it was outright terrible, but it's a giant missed opportunity to be so much better. 5.5/10
Refreshingly well done. While I still kinda wish it was an anthology film, they do a pretty good job infusing different stories from the book into one narrative. The best thing I can say is I absolutely loved the mood and Halloween atmosphere in the late 60s right before Nixon gets elected. The practical effects on the monsters (especially the Jangly Man) are indeed really well done and effective. For the most part the cast did a great job except for the bullies who can't act for sh**. Zoe Margaret Colletti was the clear standout star and she acted circles around everyone else. The movie also had some good balance of humor that worked. Overall, while I don't think it's perfect, it did a lot of things right for a PG-13 horror flick. 8/10
Another one of these that had a promising start, but ultimately falls apart. It's more or less the same plot of Widows, but not nearly the same level of talent. Since it's based on a comic, the film is super stylized and over the top, but somehow very appropriate for late 70s New York. They do a solid job on production design and costumes even down the minor details. I thought acting wise, Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss did a pretty good job. But Domhnall Gleeson is probably my favorite part of the movie and he would be perfect if they ever want to redo Dexter. The film had a solid start, but once they got to the top and became mob leaders, the movie plateaus and it didn't know what to do next. It starts to meander a lot and the editing made it even worse. Overall, it's a movie that was self sabotaged by a halfbaked script. 5/10
