The true story of the USS Indianapolis....while returning from it's top secret mission of delivering the atomic bomb that dropped on Hiroshima, it is torpedoed and it's crew spend the next four days in shark infested waters before they are found. 900 men went into the water....300 were rescued.

The Souvenir

Possibly the most milquetoast film I've seen all year. It's essentially a movie about toxic relationships, but you wouldn't know that if you're watching it. It's painfully dry and dull to the point where you kinda stop caring for the characters midway through. The movie also deals with a British film school that the main character goes to and it's all incredibly self indulgent. I wanna say performance wise they did a fine job but the direction keeps them from really emoting. Overall, I guess if you're a filmsnob you'd probably love it... for me it's one of the many examples where high brow films are just as mindless as a Transformers movie.

Batman: Hush

Eh, much like the other DC animated releases... this was pretty forgettable. I was never a fan of the original comic but they were smart enough to change things up in the movie. Animation has gotten slightly better and the character designs were somewhat of an improvement over the Nu52verse. However, the voice acting is still pretty awful and a lot of story beats fall flat. Overall, it's just another meh of a movie.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

I thought the first one was decent enough and this is more or less the same. It's pretty much a vacation trip with some DLC content. You have the main story with Patton Oswalt and his adventures, but then you get a subplot that deals with Kevin Hart's superhero obsession. It's got its moments, I thought Harrison Ford and that dumb chicken was probably the highlight of the movie. That being said, It's all too predictable. Despite the great animation, it's not doing anything new or original. Overall, It's pretty much the equivalent of getting fast food when there's nothing at home to eat.

Wonder Park

I feel like this movie escaped the early 2000s and hid for about 20 years to only come out now. It's a chaotic mess that tries to be everything and nothing at the same time. You can tell they didn't have the budget so they try to overanimate to cover for it. While it's mostly a mindless adventure, they somehow crammed in some real world problems that feels disjointed from the rest of the movie. It's like they were trying to be Pixar, but they were also aiming for those Minions movies. It's a bizarre film that doesn't really work, but you could see the potential. I will say I was glad they were singing and dancing throughout it. Overall, it's a odd animated movie that somehow feels ancient.

UglyDolls

Everything I hate about animated movies these days is all concentrated in this one film. It's almost as if someone was making a parody of a animated kids film for another show or movie. It's so formulaic, full of generic songs and dance sequences to make up for some phony message about individuality with paper thin dialogue. Overall, outside of the animation... it's a animated movie that's completely empty inside.

Tolkien

A fairly generic biopic on J.R.R. Tolkien with some decent moments in between. The biggest problem the movie has is it mostly talks about the early life of Tolkien and not the Tolkien that created the books and the world of Middle Earth. It's also not really concerned about accuracy, but that's usually the case for all biopics. I will say I thought Nicholas Hoult did a fantastic job playing Tolkein and the supporting cast was also pretty good. All the War World I scenes was pretty well done and I dug how it parallels with Middle Earth. Overall, it's somewhat decent.

Had never read the book so didn't know if its anything like the original story but was not bad, just wish they'd spent more of the time on mid-world. 7/10

It's not got a patch on his old greats like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy but it was a lot better than I expected after only seeing clips of the last few films he's put out and just a fun 90 minutes. 7/10

Brutal film.
Gaspar Noé is such an underrated film maker. His films are not for the faint of heart and also not for those who suffer from epilepsy and motion sickness.

Really good film.

It is nothing like the book. It would have to work incredibly hard to get up to just being trash.
