Son of Frankenstein

Pretty tamed compared to the first two films and that might be because James Whale didn't return to direct. The movie definitely marks the more sanitized Universal Monster movies. I can see where Mel Brooks got his idea for Young Frankenstein because it deals with the son of Dr. Frankenstein traveling to the village where his farther lived and not getting a warm welcome. Baron Frankenstein is probably the only interesting character in the movie because of what he's grappling with. As for Boris Karloff as the Monster, it's a shame they've lowered his intelligence down a bit after Bride, it would have been more fascinating if he was able to talk in complete sentences to Baron Frankenstein. Not sure how I feel about Bela Lugosi as Ygor, it's an interesting take on the assistant role, but I feel like Fritz was way more ideal and not nearly as nefarious. Overall, I enjoyed it for what it is. There's some good parts in here, but I would have liked a more ballsier approach to this story.

Not sure where else to ask this really but I'm asking for a friend as well as myself. Can anyone recommend any modern made films that have that somewhat dirty indie feel along the lines of Requiem for a Dream, Kids, Spun, Bully, etc?
I'd like to know the answer to this question as well. The only one that comes to mind personally is Good Time but I'd question if it would be under the same category.

The Ghost of Frankenstein

It's the final solo Frankenstein movie and it ends up feeling more like a standard Hammer movie which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Boris Karloff doesn't return as the monster and you do notice his absence even though I don't think Lon Chaney Jr. did a bad job. As for Bela Lugosi, I thought he did a better job as Ygor this time around. Cedric Hardwicke plays Ludwig Frankenstein and his role got a bit interesting towards the end of the movie. It's a movie that deals with brain swapping and ghosts and they somehow made it not completely goofy. I do appreciate the wrap around story with the monster and the little girl. It's a nice little nod to the original. And more importantly this movie is just over an hour and it's there's no room for random sideplots.

Florida Project, maybe? It kind of has a distinct visual style that might disqualify it from having a "dirty feel" especially when it uses small children as the point of view characters (much like Beasts of the Southern Wild). However it is one of the best "slice of life" indie movies I've seen lately so I'm going to suggest it.
