THE OLD GUARD

Immortality comes with a price

PRAISE: Even though I've seen stories like this before in the films Highlander, Deadpool and Logan, The Old Guard does have its own style and threads of originality.
This story of immortals who have done some good throughout time but pursued by some sinister characters for profit is definitely uplifted by a cast which includes :
Charlize Theron,KiKi Layne,Marwan Kenzari,Luca Marinelli,Harry Melling,Van Veronica Ngo,
Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Oh and can someone in Hollywood look into casting Layne as the new Kick Ass presently in Comics if they ever make a new KA movie !!
The action sequences are great and well choreographed
There are also some great one liners

PROBLEMS: Casting leads to the predictable. The film drops several predictable breadcrumbs.
There are a few plot holes.

I'm looking forward to the sequel

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7½

Palm Springs

I enjoyed it. And I normally don't like Adam Sandberg,

Life Force (1985) :down
horror

Some neat looking space scenes but this space vampire (more like a zombie movie) never really came together for me. Some interesting ideas poorly executed.

Run All Night (2015) :up:
thriller, crime drama

The editing was annoying when it can’t hold a shot for a second, but I was otherwise engaged the whole way through. This is definitely a ‘fathers and sons’ movie.

ERASER (1996)
QUALITY = 6/10

JOY = 10/10

Another one of those charmingly goofy movies starring our good pal Arnie. When James Caan's character was talking about a moment with his father my mind went to the Godfather.

It has the familiar charm and wit of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it kinda feels like an unintentional sequel to Commando, at least this will remind you of that at certain points.

Is there any genre Arnold did not play part in? I think he played in so many different genres it's hard to find one he did not take part in.

Ah the memories. I saw this at the drive-in during college years with my future wife.

love this movie
Agreed :up:

I was going to guess western but he was in one in 1979 called The Villain.

Haven't seen it but his costume is hilarious!

I remember seeing this movie recommended for me to watch one day, found the whole thing on normal YouTube back then and watched it until a certain point of a guy sleeping in bed hugging his pet pig.

I remember watching this on TBS during the summer about 25 years ago. It had Kirk Douglas in it and I really wanted to like it. But I couldn’t.

Onward

Much better than I expected.

THE DRIVER (2019)
QUALITY = NOBODY CARED

JOY = NOBODY HAD FUN, EXCEPT MAYBE MARK

94 minutes of movie plus some minutes of credits, and the movie is still a slow burn with too many moments dragging.

Mark Dacascos narrates in a young Clint Eastwood tone, either dumping too much info we don't need, or tell us things we already know.

Every other actor is recorded like this is a cheaply made low budget amateurish 90s - early 2000s film.

Some shots are made as if they filmed this stuff for a BMW advertisement, and just included it here, even the musical notes fit a car advertisement.

If you watched the 1978 Walter Hill movie with the same name then be happy, you watched a good movie. This is not a remake of that movie, and it's just some dumb mess.

There is a shelter town, Mark's character is a driver, and he drives law breakers to be eaten by zombies. His partner in execution started a revolution destroying the town and inviting zombies into it cause.... he wasn't allowed to drive Mark's car, those are his exact words.

And then it turns to a father & daughter road trip movie.

Here are alternatives if you want to watch better movies with some themes from this:
  1. Logan
  2. Train to Busan
  3. The Girl with All the Gifts
  4. The Driver (1978)
  5. The Transporter (only the first 2002 movie. It might not be good, but at least it functions as a watchable fun movie)

If you read my post and might think this is potentially a so bad it's good kind of film... I will repeat my point about this movie dragging needlessly and the awful narration and voice recording, and tell you it's not worth your time.
