9/10

Jordan Peele does it again. Easily one of my favorite films of the year. Not quite on par with Get Out, but definitely better than Us.

Basically Moby Dick in World War II. Clark Gable is a submarine captain who gets his vessel sunk by a Japanese destroyer Akikaze in the Bungo Strait. One year and many more sunk subs later the Akikaze has reached mythical status among American sailors afraid to go anywhere near the Strait. Gable manages to get another command and defies explicit orders so he can get REVENGE!

For a black and white 50s film, this seems suprisingly modern. Most of the movie is filmed in the tight confines of the American sub in a style that you would see in later films from Das Boot to Greyhound as opposed to what I've seen in navy films prior to this one. This film gets my seal of approval.
