THE GAME (1997)
Directed by David Fincher.
This film is sometimes forgotten or worse, portrayed as one of Fincher's "least good". But personally, I liked it a lot !
The concept is as simple as it is brilliant: a disillusioned billionaire finds himself caught up in a dangerous, large-scale game, shattering his well-ordered life.
The rhythm of the movie is absolutely impeccable. The events follow one another with fluidity, and our relationship with the character of Michael Douglas evolves, from the initial curiosity to a slightly sadistic amusement, or on the opposite, to some compassion. It's very dynamic and very entertaining.
Also, I can't fail to mention the art direction by James J. Murakami and the cinematography by Harris Savides, both of which guarantee a very solid atmosphere, no matter the location or time of day. It looks gorgeous.
Lastly, behind the creative thriller and without saying too much, there's also some typical subtext and reflections of its director, some of which will be further explored in his next film,
Fight Club.
You get it, I highly recommend this movie, whether you've seen it before or not.
