A somewhat decent action comedy that tries to be a throwback to the 80s and 90s. The plot is pretty straightforward and while the movie itself is nothing original, the cast is what keeps this movie from being really terrible. The chemistry between Kumail Nanjiani and Batista works to great effect. The rest of the cast (Iko Uwais, Betty Gilpin, Natalie Morales, and Jimmy Tatro) do have some fun bit moments. They also try to have some sort of social message about masculinity, but I don't think it was ever fully realized. Also, I actually dug how violent the action was... it caught me by surprise. Overall, it's not the best action comedy you'll see but I've seen worse than this.

The Lion King (2019)

Not bad, but it's ultimately an unnecessary remake with a couple of weak performances. Outside of one issue I have with it, I will say the CGI is absolutely incredible. Jon Feaveru pretty much took what he learned from making the Jungle Book and applied it to the Lion King and improved it on some areas. But otherwise, it's pretty much the exact same movie only 30 minutes longer. And when you compare it to the original, it's almost unfair. 2D animation still holds a lot more imagination and emotion than CGI... which they are still trying to capture and get right. I thought the majority of the cast did a great job except for Donald Glover and Beyonce. I can't tell what it is, but their performance felt pretty stiff and cold. The best part about the movie is Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner as Timon and Pumbaa who are the only comedy relief. Overall, it's a nostalgia cash grab that was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Apollo 11

Incredible stuff. This is the documentary on the Apollo 11 mission without any interference of people talking about in interview booths. It just shows the play by play of the events as it unfolds with audio from mission control and the remastered footage. One of the biggest achievement this documentary did was the 70 mm footage itself. It looks so pristine and new, you almost thought it was shot yesterday with a great cinematographer. Another is the editing which is absolutely well crafted and well paced. Overall, it's a worthwhile documentary that will be played in classrooms for years to come.

El Chicano

Pretty decent overall. It's essentially a grindhouse level superhero movie in the vein of The Crow, Darkman, and The Shadow with an all latino cast. The set up and the mythology behind it was really cool to see. And the cast did a mostly fine job with it and it was interesting seeing George Lopez play a serious character for once. The only issue I have with this movie is it's too predictable. It follows the same path as every revenge fantasy flick, mainly The Crow and Ghost Rider. At the same time, I do think they commit to the premise at full speed to where it does feel genuine . Overall though, it's a good B movie that is worthy of being noticed.

Alita: Battle Angel

There were some really cringe worthy dialogue here, with some dubious acting. I also thought the CGI on Alita's face looked a bit too obvious sometimes. She looked like a video game character in those moments IMHO. And yes, I'm in the camp who think they shouldn't have opted for those big eyes. But that's just me.

However, the visuals with the environment and all these cyborg characters etc looked great IMO. Very entertaining action scenes as well. Salazar and Waltz did well, but Connelly (who is a good actress IMO) felt a bit off. I blame the writing of the character.

Over all entertaining despite some flaws, and I actually wouldn't mind a sequel.


John Wick Parabellum

I think I enjoyed this one more than the second one. Long fighting scenes can be a bit overwhelming to me, especially when you know that there will be a gazillion of them in one film, but it worked fine for me here. And they managed to put in some slow scenes in the right places, and even a few humorous moments.

Cool to see Halle Barry in some really bad ass action scenes together with Reeves. That made me want to see her do more action stuff instead of risking getting typically roles by Hollywood as a female actress over 40: Playing a mother to some kid/teenager that the story actually centers around.

Anyway, this was great fun with great old and new characters. Give me one more, please.
