Recently watched Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country, the last Trek film w the original cast, and saw that the end credits, just like Avengers Endgame, started w the signature of each cast member, even leaving William Shatner's for last. The effect was pretty fantastic. Endgame knew well what to borrow from.

PRAISE:Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck / Joker is incredible.He immersed himself into the character.The moments of hope,care,sadness and insanity reflect through his eyes ,mannerisms and physical performance in a mesmerizing way.This is a character study of one of the most iconic DC villains.The other actors in the film: Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Shea Whigham, and Bill Camp do a fine job but they are mainly there to get Fleck from point A to B.
The film gave me so much to reflect on and question.If seeds of trauma are planted within a person,if this person is pushed to the edge and commits violent acts should we have empathy for this person?
I also loved how the film provoked uncomfortable laughter from not only myself but the audience i watched it with.A shiver actually went down my spine in one of the films climatic moments !!
The violence is brutal but i didnt find it to be over the top.
People will definitely compare the performances of Heath Ledger and Phoenix,but they can definitely co exist because these are two different takes on the character and both actors gave it their all.
This is a haunting film about how a system can fail people,contemporary commentary,and one of the best stories about one of the greatest villains in comic books ,film,TV,and animation.


PROBLEMS: Some turns in the story were very predictable,set up in such a way that there was no where to go but through predictable doors.
The infusion of shades of movies like The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver were a bit to blatant.

SIDE NOTE: At the end of an article i read a writer said:Warner Brothers should release a statement saying The Joker isnt a role model.....Are you kidding me? .In his 80 year history when has The Joker ever been a role model? I need a film studio to tell me that?
The media will probably jump on an incident that happened at a theatre in which a drunk guy was cheering on in obnoxious way about the violence in the film but he was escorted out by security.
The 15 cops outside my theatre wasnt necessary.SMH !!





COLD PURSUIT

Kind of like Taken but with a HUGE sense of humor




PRAISE: Another movie i wish i had seen in theatres.What a fun movie with a plot that's supposed to be bleak as snowplow driver Nels Coxman (Liam Nesson) pursues the people that killed his son.
This very dark comedy made me laugh out loud so many times from it's footnote captions and brutal but darkly funny deaths.The banter between the characters about anything from eating healthy to being winded from fighting was so much fun to listen to .Oh and this film is absolutely beautiful to look at !!


PROBLEMS:So much greatness comes before the films climax that i was kind of dissapointed with it.It just felt so basic as if the writers gave up and ran out of interesting things to do.


Still a nice surprise !!

Nightmare Cinema

It's another one of these horror anthologies and like most anthologies, they are a mixed bag of short films. The frame takes place at a old movie theater where the stars of each short shows up and Mickey Rourke is the host. It starts off with The Thing in the Woods which is basically a typical slasher parody that turns into something else. The acting isn't their strongest suit, but the story did take some interesting turns. It's very tongue in cheek but I wasn't impressed by it outside of the effects. Mirare is kinda like Eyes Without a Face meets a Twilight Zone episode. There's some interesting things going on, but it's pretty on the surface level horror and nowhere as great as it could be. Mashi✝ is basically your typical demon possession movie only on bath salts and cocaine. It's more in common with Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness than The Exorcist only not as clever. It's probably the weakest one of the bunch. This Way to Egress is easily the best one and one everyone should check out. It's directed by David Slade and he does a great job showcasing Elizabeth Reaser losing her mind in a nightmarish environment. I could easily see it as a full length film. Dead closes out the anthology and it's mostly a ghost story with a little bit of Halloween II thrown in. It's decent for the most part. Overall, it's really worth seeing just for the David Slade short, otherwise, it's another average horror anthology.
