AS TEARS GO BY

As Tears Go By,is a film from the late eighties by Kar Wai Wong, known for his consistently superior directing talent, this little masterpiece is an excellent precursor to his “Chunking Express” which changed the world of cinema upon it’s release. There is so much to offer in this film, it’s difficult to begin.

Brother Wah(Andy Lau), works for a Chinese mob, his impetuous college Brother Fly(Jacky Cheung) is often the cause for much trouble, as his irrational decisions and quest for pride lead Brother Wah into bailing him out repeatedly. Ang-ngor(Maggie Cheung), Brother Wah’s ill cousin, comes to stay. Having never met before, their acclimatisation to each other provides some interesting character play and builds to construct a fruitful and engaging narrative.

The colour palette of the whole film is quite spectacular indeed, showing off so much more than your average piece of cinema, developing a unique visual construction of colour, generating meaning and referentially building upon the film.

Kar Wai Wong’s ability to capture motion in both the subjects, environment and the camera itself is unrivalled amongst other filmmakers. The effortless ease in which he forms sequences to create extra purpose and appeal through movement is spectacular, his approach to speed of motion is the most obvious and notable.

Performances are close to perfection, as the characters come to life on screen. Brother Fly’s character is seemingly annoying, however this is a personality trait, which justifies the audiences reactions and feeling towards him throughout the film. Words are sometimes not necessary to convey the raw emotion within this movie, especially between Brother Wah and Ang-ngor.

All in all, this film is pretty close to perfect, with very little if anything that could be improved upon, a product of the culture and era in which is was produced, Kar Wai Wong demonstrates a mastery over colour, shape and motion within each scene. Not for all audiences, but certainly a masterpiece from possibly the greatest director of all time.
