What's the Most Popular Movie Set in Your Home State?

lol I thought you mean the tv show called list...I thought there was a TV show list haha wow its early

It's my fault as well. It was worded strangley.

I edited my post for clarity. :yay:

yes, save someone else from the embarrassment

Nope, I'm convinced Mordor is in New Zealand. Peter Jackson just filmed real occurrences. They weren't movies, they were documentaries.

I'm gonna say that as a New Yorker, I'm disappointed in the list.

Sure, there are tons of great movies set in New York, but you can't really get much better than The Godfather.

Then get better. Drop on us our list of movies set in NY better than The Godfather.

Well, you see, "better" is a subjective term and your minds are already made up. As far as I'm concerned, any movie set in NY is better than the Godfather simply by not being a mobster movie.

Frankly, when I think "New York" and "movie", I think Ghostbusters.

I think part of the problem with movies that take place in the "big cities" of the US is that lots of then seem interchangeable. This generally applies more to action movies and action/comedies, but whether it takes place in NY, Chicago, LA, etc, it's a lot of the same "tall buildings/traffic/etc" background, but nothing to really set the city apart.

Maryland got The Silence of the Lambs somehow. I didn't even realize that was supposedly set here. Lambs, if you boil it down, isn't about Maryland. It's just set in several fictional/fictionalized places that are supposed to be in the state.

If they had gone by films that really represent each state, Maryland would be repped by a John Waters movie. Hairspray, Cry-Baby or Serial Mom would have done just fine. Waters' oeuvre embodies the off-beat heart of this state. We're not like that, except we are.

Maryland is the alternate ending to Hairspray where all the whites pack up and move away from the blacks.

I'm not sure how Cry Baby and Serial Mom relate cause I haven't seen them.

Hairspray was set in Baltimore in the early 1960's. The dance show in it is based on an actual show that aired back then, The Buddy Deane Show, which ended because the station couldn't add Black dancers. Some older friends of mine watched the show when they were kids and said that it was every tween's fantasy to be on it, just like Tracy Turnblad. It's a great movie and the one I enjoyed the most. The musical version is every bit as fun as the original, with John Travolta camping it up as Edna Turnblad and James Marsden showing remarkable singing chops. The opening musical number is "Good Morning Baltimore."

Cry-Baby was another of Waters' Baltimore films, and Serial Mom filmed here when I was in college. Serial Mom was set in Baltimore County but a lot of it was shot in the city. It was a big event at school because a lot of students in my department (Communications) either got work on it or hung around the sets. The fact that important scenes were filmed at the old Hammerjack's nightclub (where coeds got hammered) was also a major attraction.
