When did the Yellow ellipse fall out of style?

Howl, my comment wasn't directed toward you, just the many bat-fans who say that the elipse doesn't work based on brightness alone.

Interesting that you all bring this up because I have the very issue where they started using the yellow oval....

On the cover it shows Batman lounging in the Batcave watching himself on TV and Robin worriedly looking at him...

It had some blurb about how Robin knew something was wrong. When you read the issue you find out that the oval wasn't used on the cover revealing that it wasn't the real Batman but a criminal who didn't know that Batman had now switched to the oval.

It was, of course, during the campy sixties and it was drawn by Carmine Infantino.

Sorry dude.....I hate to burst your bubble or ruin your collection but you are misinformed.

I have the book your talking about as well but its "NOT" the first appearance of the yellow oval.

Heres the book your talking about.

Batman #183 released in August 1966

The yellow oval was seen in 19 issues of Batman before # 183....since issue #164 released in June 1964.

But even that was not the first appearance of the yellow oval.

The yellow oval "FIRST" appeared in Detective Comics #327 released May 1964

You dont see it on the cover but you can see it says..."Introducing a New Look"

This is just personal preference but if and when Bruce does come back as Batman in the comics, I would love to see an all black suit with a yellow bat symbol. It's something I've always wanted to see. Kind of like this

Without the yellow cape lining, gloves, and boots.

I agree that they need to bring Bats back with a new suit, but have it be FRESH & Traditionbal at the same time...

give him new gloves, longer trunks, a smaller black bat on the chest (OR ELIPSE), the same boots as always and a longer More flowing cape and sleaker ears on the cowl...

NEW BELT TOO

From what I recall, the reason the yellow Batsymbol was dropped was because the Bat creators at the time wanted to mark the beginning of a new phase in The Batman's development.

Bruce had changed in the wake of No Man's Land, and as a result, the yellow oval and capsules were dropped to give a visual stamp to this new era, to say "hey, this is a changed Batman, a changed Gotham, and a changed outlook."

Thus the return to Bruce's original costume from before he "lightened up," both figuratively and literally.

It had nothing to do with Frank Mi11er or the animated series or any other motive save giving a visual cue to this concept of going "back to basics." Miller chose to do the same with The Batman in TDKR, though for different story reasons.

I personally prefer the unadorned bat. The Batman is the ONLY character in comics who IS his own symbol through his profile and costume; he doesn't need the yellow bat, or a bat symbol at all, really.

Bob Kane admitted it was only put on The Batman's chest because he was tasked by then National Comics to develop a character who was similar to Superman. Hence the trunks and cape, though the cape makes more sense to The Batman's aesthetic.

Most current comic artists depict the batsuit without the yellow ellipse bat symbol that came about in the 60's. They've actually went as far as to remove it from the 20th anniversary edition of the killing joke. When did artists decide to do away with it? Also what motivated this?

Whoa, I didnt know that. I got a newer version of TKJ and Batman doesn't have the yellow symbol, just the black bat. I just assumed it was always like that.
