When Shows Collide: Television Crossovers Through The Ages

There was a Hawaii 5-0/NCIS LA Crossover and Bones/Sleepy Hollow.

The great SEAL reunion was lost because 5-0's SEAL McGarrett/Alex O'Loughlin was in rehab recovering over medication from on set injuries. Danial Dae Kim's old cop Chin Ho Kelly had to stand in for the super SEAL

And if you take Sleepy Hollow to be as "true" as Bones then that means ultimately Booth was right and Bones was wrong for that series.

Chinese actor and martial artist legend Sammo Hung had an American TV series called MARTIAL LAW (1998-2000) where he played the character Sammo Law. He appeared as that character in two other CBS shows - WALKER, TEXAS RANGER and EARLY EDITION.

Chuck Norris appeared as Cordel Walker from WALKER, TEXAS RANGER in an episode of the MARTIAL LAW series.

Scooby and Mystery Inc. gang famously had xovers with characters who had their own HB cartoons:

-Josie and the ***** Cats, (wich makes the Archie-verse part of the Scooby-verse)

-and Batman family are all in a shared universe.

Zorro is often referenced in universe as having inspired Bruce Wayne.

Taking it further an unofficial Zorro - Batman xover Dr. Wayne, an eccentric inventor, implied great ancestor of Bruce Wayne (Adam West) actually meets Zorro, implying he might have passed down the legend to a certain descendant, played by his younger self.

Oh yeah, then this happened!

Going back to the origins of the Tommyverse. Cooledge, the center from the high school basketball team on The White Shadow turned up on St Elsewhere as Cooledge, former Boston College basketball player with a career ending injury as now a hospital orderly.

One of the biggest was nearly all the King Feature Syndicate comic-strip characters at the time appearing in the 1972 made for TV animated "movie":

Although Lee Falk's Phantom and Mandrake had met in the strips before, here was the first ever TV team-up between Flash Gordon, Mandrake, Lothar, The Phantom (also Steve Canyon) in their first "shared universe" adventure, to save the rest of the King Feature Syndicate comic characters:

I feel like The Fresh Prince is the center of a big TV universe.

Since in the finale, Arnold and Mr. Drummond popped by, as well as The Jeffersons, does this somehow mean that The Fresh Prince, Diff'rent Strikes (and both The Facts of Life and Hello Larry), and The Jeffersons (and, by extension, All In the Family), all take place in the same world? I mean, probably not, but it's fun to imagine.

Here's a weird one I came across by accident.....on the ROSEANNE show back in 1994.....during a dream sequence, Roseanne dreamed she was interacting with 2 characters from the soap ONE LIFE TO LIVE (Clint Richie and Robert S. Woods as the Buchanan brothers).

On Day By Day, Ross has a dream where he's a long lost Brady. Mike & Carol Brady, Marcia, Peter and Bobby, and Alice all appear in the dream.

Actor Patrick Labyorteaux who played Bud Roberts in the TV series JAG has appeared as the same character on the series N.C.I.S. three times.

Actors Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J from N.C.I.S: Los Angeles appeared as the same characters in both N.C.I.S. and HAWAII 5-O.

A personal fave....

Loved this moment when I saw it first time round....

NCIS was a backdoor pilot on JAG first. Commander Rabb was suspected of murdering a Lieutenant played by the actor's real life wife and Special Agent Gibbs ran the investigation .
There is an interview with Bellasario saying he didn't want the series linked because JAG's audience was old. He says now outside of America the young are watching the NCIS franchise while it is part of the aging CBS audience in America

JAG/NCIS never protected its franchise, sort of like Law & Order you did have regulars on one show turn up as characters on another in the biggest case Petty Officer Coates, actress Zoe McLellan, from the JAG office turned up as Agent Brody in the first season of NCIS New Orleans. However in the other direction the second and longest running of the three actual Judge Advocate General's of the US Navy Adm A.J. Chegwidden, (retired) showed up on NCIS Los Angeles when actor Miguel Ferrer started taking medical leave near the end of his life. He also showed up on the first NCIS in the opposite of the backdoor pilot to defend Agent Gibbs from charges.

...the Gary 7 character from the Assignment Earth episode of Star Trek which was a back door pilot.
I always imagined Gary 7 was Trek's version of a time lord or incarnation of Dr. Who crossed over into their Universe. A way for those shows to coexist in the same U.
Even had his own sonic-screwdriver/servo-pen.
And companion in Teri Garr.

Doctor at the time would have been Patrick Troughton with Companions – Jamie & Victoria.

I miss JAG. I was addicted to it when I was 10. I was such a dork.

Heroes and Icons network have recently added it to their Wednesday afternoon marathon bloc. Amazon Prime only had the first season free. The one with LT Pike from the pilot and mostly LtJG Austin and not Col McKenzie who finished the series.

Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends which featured X-Men's Ice-man and retroactively Firestar, and eventual crossover with the full X-Men used as testing ground to develop their own cartoon in Pride of the X-Men..

Live action Hulk had crossovers with Dare Devil as testing grounds for possible TV spinoffs.

If I am remembering correctly I think there was also a Rodimus Prime era episode that referenced Flint and his daughter with LadyJaye but I'm too lazy to look it up right now.

I am always surprised that Paramount or whomever has the rights to the Assignment Earth idea haven't tried to do something with it. I never read the novels they used him in but the idea is sound and certainly lends itself to some interesting and dramatically rich stories if done right. I would certainly watch a streaming version if it happened.

Was that really the case or was it just reusing the Robby suit for a LiS episode? Any old school LiS fans can tell us if it was a legit crossover with the classic film?

It wasn't a crossover. They took Robbie the Robot from FORBIDDEN PLANET....changed his head some....but didn't reference the movie at all. It was just a cost saving event...they didn't have to build a complete new robot for the episode....just the head.

I think you just coined a new pop culture term Lee.

So like when we hear them use the Sound Effects from the 50's War Of The World movie in cartoons in the 80's that's a "cost saving event". :woot:

If you watch enough shows you will see and hear thousands of cost saving events. Just like the "Wilhelm scream" is used all the time....there are things like the same flash of lightning is not only used in hundreds of movies and TV shows....sometimes it is used multiple times in the same show. Robbie the Robot was redressed with a different head in 4 or 5 TV shows throughout the 60's and 70's. The same footage of crocs entering a river or a lion killing a gazelle is used in over a half dozen Tarzan movies.

You can start a thread for discussing scenes used in multiple movies and not meant to be crossovers....they are simply a movie scene grabbed by someone to save money on their movie.

Sadly I have a feeling the "Stock Footage" thread wouldn't be much of a hit.

50'/60's Warner's Detective Series 77 Sunset Strip and Hawaiian Eye had a few cameos/Crossovers with each other.
