Johnny Cash's version was infinitely better, you really felt the pain, it's the only song that can make me cry and I think the addition of his late wife into the video just made it completely gut wrenching.:(

Yeah, Cash's is better. The fact that Renzor doesn't sound like him to me in it also puts it down a bit.

I loved the original, but Johnny's version topped it. The message was much more impactful coming from a man who was so near the end of his life.

i like johnny's.

johnny recorded the song because someone reccomended it to him, reznor and cash had the same producer on cash's last album.

other.

Sad kermit rapes them both

The original. I normally like Cash, but singing a sad song as sparsely and "depressedly" sad as possible isn't very interesting to me. You get more initial emotional reaction from it, but it lacks any lasting power, especially considering he didn't write it.

Similarly, I hate nothing so much as the Gary Jules cover of Mad World. At least Johnny Cash has emotional depth to what he did, Jules just took an ironic song and made it sappy.

NIN, I think the meaning behind it reflects the the state of Trent when The Downward Spiral was made amongst other chaotic state of mind.

The Cash cover is cool, but I prefer the original. Not really a fan of NIN but that album is really cool.

Cash. I prefer his cover of Personal Jesus over the original as well.

I just looked it up on Youtube, you're ****ting me, he can't have really been doing this. I'm not dogging anybody for liking his versions, to each his own I guess, but what posessed him to take a bunch of other people's electronic songs and do depressing acoustic covers?

Define a bunch?

Okay, let's just say, "More than one." Again, they're not necessarily bad, but they seem EXACTLY aimed at the "take a song, make it unironically, unsubtly sad" thing.

You don't think that to have a legend with nothing left to prove listening to many different genres from different generations and deciding to do a cover or two for songs that really speak to him is kinda cool?

Sad tones delivered in that way is what JC has always been about so I don't really see how your critism of this would be any different from what you'd say about any song he's ever done. He took a song and put his style into it, but that's what any artist that's ever done a cover has done.

Johnny Cash version was way better he put more heart in it.

Cash has the perfect voice for the song, his version is much better IMO.

It's so telling, that "Neither, they're both great in different ways." isn't an option on the poll.
It's crazy how humans have such a drive to rank everything, and make everything a competition, and frame things as absolutes.

What if you like the NIN version for what it is, and the Cash version for what it is?
Well, that doesn't interest threadmaker. Life is Black+White damn it! :cmad:
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
:whatever:
