We have a lot of veterans as well as up and comers. Share your opinions on them and what they bring to the table. For me I love the director who made Arrival. That was a great production.

Denis Villeneuve is on one hell of a hot streak

Scorsese's last decade has seen:

The Departed
Shutter Island
Hugo
The Wolf of Wall Street
Silence

If Silence lives up to the hype, I'd say the master is still the best going.

I really like Shutter Island. I don't get the hate.

I think the best current living director is Spielberg (love me some good old sentimentalism). Scorsese is amazing too but I haven't loved any of his post 2000 films except for Hugo.

I think the most exciting new talents working today are Paul Thomas Anderson and Denis Villeneuve.

Hopefully Dunkirk puts Christ Nolan back on track, because I've been disappointed with his last two films.

I'm assuming you mean RIGHT NOW, not their whole body of work.

1. Paul Thomas Anderson
2. Martin Scorsese
3. Joel and Ethan Coen
4. Quentin Tarantino
5. Wes Anderson
6. Christopher Nolan
7. Spike Jonze
8. David Fincher
9. Denis Villeneuve
10. Darren Arronofosky

I think that Tarantino is the only director to be on real time with Bill Maher.

Jeff Nichols appears to be on a huge hot streak. Also since 2009 James Wan has been a money machine.

I wonder if it's because of the cinematographers the use?

Frank Darabont. Truly underrated.

Based in their most recent and up-coming films -

1. Paul Thomas Anderson (Inherent Vice is a pretty brilliant mix of Altman, Ashby and Cheech & Chong all the while retaining the enigmatic tone of The Master. I can't wait to see him and Day-Lewis together again)

2. Denis Villeneuve (the next superstar director. What's great is how he's been able to retain the intelligence and complexity of something like Enemy and apply it to what would normally be standard action thrillers. He never fails at keeping the audience engaged in the big ideas)

3. Martin Scorsese (50 years of relevant filmmaking. Silence is, IMO, his best since Goodfellas but that doesn't take away from the quality of any work in between. I'm both excited and a bit sad at the idea that The Irishman could his send off but I don't doubt it will be amazing)

4. The Coens (their work always benefits from repeated viewing making them the most re-watch worthy on here. Like Scorsese, they have nothing left to prove and their free reign filmmaking is an event each year. Looking forward to see them tackle television)

5. Park Chan-wook (I was at a loss for this spot. Lots of other directors I could fit here but Chan-wook is always stirring. Aside from Silence, The Handmaiden was my most anticipated for 2016)

If you mean "right now" as in directors who have just started turning out films within the last decade or so, then

Denis Villeneuve
Jeff Nichols
Rian Johnson

Where does Tarantino fit? He has one of the biggest fan bases.

The guys who directed Captain America: Civil War -- the Russo Brothers-- are my favorite at the moment.

- Damien Chazelle's a solid talent and I'd like to see him branch out into other genres
- Matt Reeves is on a great streak as well
- Neill Blomkamp maybe? I know he's had some misses but he's unquestionably talented as well
- James Wan for his streak of horror movies whether he's directed or produced them

I'd say Denis Villeneuve and then Nicolas Winding Refn. Refn is pretty defiant and seems content to keep doing crazy arthouse movies, after Drive he was thought to be a touch closer to mainstream but has continued going in the opposite direction and I admire him for making the films he wants. I always know with his movies i'm going to be seeing something stylized and interesting.

I tried watching Silence on cable.
But it was so bleak, I couldn't finish it.

At this point Christopher Nolan and Denis Villenueve come to my mind.

Both are currently insanely famous and have an amazing and unbeatable portfolio of film streaks.

Also, both released two amazing films this year - Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049, respectively.

Cab't argue with you.

What makes these guys so good? Is it their style? Creative choices?
