Cameron? Nolan? who?

I love Cameron....but lets face it...Titanic woulda been a hit no matter the director...would it make as much as it did...prob not... and Avatar...sure...it was good. Visually amazing...but the story was very common IMO. take away the whole new planet (moon, pandora) and its a simple story of indians being overwhelmed... but this story has them win...for now. but i admit, cameron made magic.

Nolan, hes amazing as well but in a very different way...

who is the best director right now? as soon as we get some good choices, ill happily add a poll.

Christopher Nolan
Quentin Tarantino
Sam Mendes
Steven Spielberg
The Coens
Martin Scorcese .. still got it

newer but show promise.....
Darren Aronofsky
Edgar Wright
J.J. Abrams
MAtt Reeves

i love abrams. and yea Scorcese is great,,,and surprisingly UNDERrated

Christopher Nolan hands down, he really knows whats important in a film to the audience and critics. I really get attached to many of his movies in a way i dont with other directors such as james cameron. Nolan draws me into the characters and the story in a very unique way thats not done these days.

i agree...but cameron really got me into the characters as well. its just the overall plot of the movie... sure it was all futuristic and ****, but the concept seems so unoriginal to me.

nolan is great too. but damn Scorsese is still around, Ron Howard when he stops being a ***** is good. Del Toro, Peter Jackson... Jackson did something with LOTR i never thought possible. as nerdy as i sound, Jackson doing a Zelda movie would make me wanna shoot myself bc after seeing it nothing would top it. lol

I forgot to mention Peter Jackson and Del Toro , both are amazing

i don't think so. Titanic was a very tricky rope to cross for many reasons. one of the biggest reasons is because it's not the typical blockbuster material. it's not some sci fi war or a cop in high speed chase fighting mob bosses. it's about an old fashioned cruise line ship crossing the sea and slowly sinking into the ocean. on top of that, it was an enormous undertaking to get the visuals to look as good as they do and many shots look outdated by today's standards.

basically, imo, Cameron is really the only one that could've done Titanic the justice it deserves...

the justice it deserved? jesus dude it made money because it was a love story and the girls saw it 500 times. other than that, i really dont see it. anyone could have done it.

B\

yeah, Michael Bay or Stephen Sommers TOTALLY could have made Titanic...

Yes titanic was a very typical love story in many ways, just because it was based on a true tragedy doesnt change that. Nolan doesnt follow that path of typical hollywood blockbusters which i respect and his films come out fantastic, its crazy how Nolan really doesnt have much on his resume and is still rising without doing typical hollywood crap.

sorry, forgot to contribute...

i think the best directors (at least in Hollywood) now-a-days include J.J. Abrams, Nolan, Scorsese and Alfonso Cuaron.

dude, the action aspect, yes. probably, but story/love story ..no. if u r trying to say no one else could have made titanic, then so be it, i disagree. i just think its extremely over rated. and made much more money than it deserved.

thats exactly what i like about Nolan. sure TDK and BB are superhero flicks, but they are in fact different,

inception, jesus, the entire idea of it is like ok... Matrix within a Matrix within a Matrix with a side dish of a Matrix. it sound ridiculous. But dammit the man made it amazingly fun to watch, it was truly a mind blowing experience. The Matrix, was fun, Reloaded Sucked, Revolutions...was that a movie? had someone like nolan done a trilogy it would have been fantastic,

IMO Nolan, today this second, is the best Director. then again, i keep wanting to say Peter Jackson.

Christopher Nolan
Quentin Tarantino
David Fincher
Guillermo Del Toro
Alfonso Cuaron
The Coen Brothers
Martin Scorsese
J.J. Abrams

i'm trying to say that no one could've put all the elements together as well like Cameron. yes, Titanic and Avatar have typical stories based on real tragedies....but no one has the vision and know-how to put together all of the elements that appeal the mass public the way Cameron can. Nolan is great because he introduces new concepts in a way that's accessible to most people under 60. Cameron is great because he takes tried and true methods/stories and tells them in a way that hasn't been done before. if you say that PARTS of Titanic could've been done by anyone then i might be inclined to agree, but AS A WHOLE, Cameron was the only one with the vision and know-how back in 96/97 to have pulled off the kind of cinematic achievements that were made.

Heh, when I saw the title of the thread I thought my first reaction was that I would find some Nolan vs. Cameron debate here... :)

Well, I think those directors are the best at the moment at what they're doing. Nolan doing movies with more complex stories and Cameron is my opinion king of pure popcorn-movies. It's pointless comparing these two since they're making very different movies.

They're might be the best directors mainstream Hollywood can offer, but there are others (like those already mentioned)

The two best directors right now are:
Christopher Nolan
Lars Von Trier

Also, the following will make me interested, and possibly watch if the film looks decent.
Guillermo Del Toro
Darren Aronofksy

Tarsem Singh: He's only done The Cell (which was...eh) and The Fall but this guy can make some beautiful scenes! The Fall is gorgeous! I'm looking forward to Immortals, which should be outstanding.

Miloš Forman

1963 Audition
1964 Black Peter
1965 Loves of a Blonde
1967 The Firemen's Ball
1971 Taking Off
1973 Visions of Eight
1975 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
1979 Hair
1981 Ragtime
1984 Amadeus
1989 Valmont
1996 The People vs. Larry Flynt
1999 Man on the Moon
2006 Goya's Ghosts
2011 The Ghost of Munich

My favorite.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

My favorite of all time will always be Spielberg. Recently Peter Jackson is the only one that's consistently wowed me. I can recognize Nolan's talent, but he doesn't make movies that I want to go see.

Guillermo Del Toro definitely, amazing creativity and the man just GETS using practical effects to their fullest extents.

I can respect Tarantino's work but it just never resonated with me. Basterds in particular grated me in the final Shoshonna scene where the nice guy Nazi suddenly turns evil just to justify his death. But I can get that he's one of the best director's out there.

Christopher Nolan as many say too, love his work and his use of non-linear storylines and twists actually have a thematic reason for being. My gripes with him are that his female characters are not usually as well rounded or directed, though I'm hoping that's changing given that Ariadne and Mal were brilliant in Inception. His action scenes could be much better done, though again, looks like they are greatly improving especially with Inception's hallway scene, and though the snow scene has quibbles it was still immense, Bond-style fun.

Surprised no one mentioned PT Anderson.
Like Nolan and Cuaron he's the one director who's movies are always eagerly anticipated.

Good god! I am going to have to stick my head up Camerons ass to see what all the fuss is about. He is a mediocre director at best. He just knows how to manipulate the masses. Now if we are talking about the best Sheep Herder of all time....
