James Bond has certainly been at a different level than the current marvel films, but consider:
1. In You Only Live Twice, Blofield had a space station and was using it to try to pit the Soviets against the US.
2. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, they were brainwashing people to use them to distribute biological warfare agents.
3. In Diamonds are Forever, they had a killer satellite.
4. In Moonraker, the plot revolved around a space station.
The James Bond films I grew up with shared a lot with the comic-books I read in that they both dealt with larger-than-life elements of space, technology and evil villains with plans for world domination.
Now some might argue that those elements of the movies diverged from the original books, but it's the movies, not the books that made James Bond a household name.
And those films pushed the limits far beyond what was technically possible at the time.
More recent James Bond films aren't nearly as ambitious on those elements, and some might argue that's for the better. But personally, I'd like to see James Bond films that push those elements - but do so in a way that isn't cheesy.
