The Amazing Spider-Man Who is Peter Parker to you?

I'm not going to bother on casting or typecasting, as that is pointless to think about at this point. I think Garfield has an excellent resume (just as Maguire did when he wast cast...too bad he let it rust in the intervening years as Spidey) and should be able to pull off the role that is written and directed.

What I hope to see in the character is a more relaxed Peter who is comfortable in his own skin. However, that does not mean I want him to be Marty McFly (the cool kid) or some form of Mr. Popular that Stan got kind of lazy about near the end of his run and turned him into.

He should still be shy and somewhat geeky, but confident in his own geekiness. If there are sequels he can come out of his shell and develop a close group of friends (Flash, Gwen, Harry and of course MJ), but he should start as somewhat an outsider. But one who is a smartass both in and out of costume. That cheeky streak is the one thing I think Raimi really missed.

I hope they can keep the same sense of honor and emotional burden that Maguire was able to pull across so effectively that he kept the audiences rooting for him all three movies (or at least 2.5 of them ;) ), he just needs to be a little more mellow and funnier.

My two cents.

Very thoughtful and very well put. People rush to slam the Raimi films and Maguire's portrayal of Peter...and while these films certainly aren't without flaws (some large, some small), they did some very good things as well.

That aspirational aspect is literalized right there in his name: He's a teenager when he gets his powers, but he names himself Spider-Man. Spider-Man isn't just who Peter is, it's who Peter wants to be, the man he wants to (and eventually does) grow into: Cool, strong, proactive, always ready with a one-liner, and free of the problems that aren't right in front of him.

There are a lot of different aspects to Peter Parker's character. My favorite interpretations of him (outside of the lee/ditko run) are probably Bendis's ultimate/ultimate comics spider-man and in the first few arcs of Straczynski's run. He is really

People are too quick to crap on the character. I really like Peter in the first two Raimi movies. Obviously there were some deviations from the comics, but I still feel like they did a good job overall. They nailed his financial struggles and I liked his relationship with Harry. Yea, they cut back on the quipping, but I still thought he had a good sense of humor in the movie, it was just more subtle (I thought Tobey did a good job of maintaining a certain sense of humor in his facial expressions). Overall, I thought Maguire worked perfectly within the context of the movies. Honestly, the lack of jokes wasn't my main issue with Peter in the Raimi trilogy. My main problem was the fact that it seemed like he had almost no social life for the bulk of the trilogy, while in the comics, he always seems to have a group of friends.

In this movie, I'm hoping for them to show his sense of humor and his intelligence a little more, and to show Peter interacting with a group of friends (preferably like in TSSM or USM).

i would not mind at all if when in the suit fighting the bad guy spider-man (garfield) acts like spider-man did in the 90's animated series when he dawned the suit. i used to watch that show every morning as a kid haha

i think the portrayal of peter in that show is a little too mature and down to earth with himself to be the parker in the first movie though.. maybe a little down the road like on the second or third movie. but then again the show never covered the origin aspect, it was a mature and confident web head.. :woot:
