Jack is a charismatic presence and very entertaining and he's great at chewing scenery and going testicles out crazy... But for a very long time he basically plays a larger than life version of himself in films. There's nothing wrong with that and many giant stars from Hollywood essentially do the same thing.
But Deniro can and has done what Jack can AND disappear into roles. He successfully plays against type and can affect accents and characteristics you rarely if ever see from a Jack, especially as the years have gone by.
Honestly I don’t necessarily think either of them is someone I’d say has a tremendous amount of range or is a chameleon or anything, and De Niro has roles where he’s just “De Niro” the same as Nicholson has roles where he’s just Nicholson, but to me it’s more so with Nicholson just being Nicholson most of the time.
Love both actors but its Jack for me. Deniro best works within the crime genre. Nicholson works everywhere and he pretty much steals every film he's in regardless of who's in it with him.
