who is tired of the movie makers stalling wonder woman

Yeah, a pre-existing brand can help, but it's not a prerequisite to a successful movie. There have been any number of successful comic book films - and films in general really - that had no pre-existing brand awareness amongst the general public.

Wonder Woman already has a considerable awareness; people know who she is, if not much more; that still puts her ahead of Blade and every Vertigo adaptation that's yet been done.

Now, some of that awareness is probably counterproductive; the aforementioned awful TV show, for example, is a silly drag in the same way the Adam West Batman is for people taking the character seriously. A Wonder Woman movie has to be like the '89 Batman in showing people why the charactetr should be taken seriously and not as a campy joke.

Oh, I wasn't saying that Wonder Woman has zero brand awareness. I was just making a general point.

I think Wonder Woman getting made is going to end up depending if Green Lantern is successful or not and WB deciding to go forward with DC films as a result.

And people thought that Superman Returns was going to be a massive success as well. I just don't think that we can guarantee such things unless it's Batman 3.

In all seriousness though, I think the GL movie will do well. I'm hoping somewheres about Iron Man type money.

Yeah, now they have a director with blockbuster experience in Martin Campbell, it seems like a sure fire hit. Its either the star (Gosling? Hartnett? Duhamel? We shall find out) or the special effects that would carry the film. But even more importantly, its success would drive more DC characters not named Superman or Batman towards their own live action solo movies. The script including crossover references to the DCU would help that cause extremely.

While you're right that WB has dropped the ball, again i cant necessarily blame them.

Neither do I but they are making things worse then they need to be.

it's easy to be in wb's position when you already have proven franchises.

Its always good to build new franchises. WW's already half way there since she's an iconic figure. They wont lose Batman or Superman if they start making new DCU franchises. It only adds to their resources. If WB had done this behavior in the 60's they woudn't have ther current Superman or Batman franchises. That takes work and resources over time to create. DCs lesser franchises will never make money for them unless they compentently succeed with them.

The female action market isnt really stable,

Then they need to fix it so it is stable. This is hardly impossible for a company with their resources.

and yeah, ww could easily change that, but to wb, why take the risk?
The risks can be toned down with good planning. It's quite surprising that they'd be eager to make GL but not WW. WW is actually much safer with the public IMO. Then again De Line and Berlanti have managed GL much better then Silver ever did with WW. Replace him with someone competent and the franchise should have less risk.

It was hardly a bomb IIRC. It's mistakes were avoidable, too.

Batman didn't get there over night. It took decades of quality work from high profile movies, tv shows and merchandise to get there. There's no reason WW can't do the same.

yea i really hope gl does go well and is a good success for wb/dc comics so it could potenitally help get flash/ww and other deserving dc characters to the big screen.

I loved Superman Returns, but I think it's undebatable that a Superman film shoud have been the #1 film of the year without the Pirates of the Caribbean juggernaut, but #2 at least since that film came out.

Warner Bros. should have done a better job promoting the film and gave it a better position than a week and a half before Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

And Singer should have made a film that would have been embraced by everyone, not people like me who are lovers of the Donner Superman films.

Very true.

WB positioned GL in the same spot they marked for I am Legend (12/14/07). Provided they keep costs reasonable, produce a quality GL movie and market it properly -- they should see a tidy profit. I can't see GL grossing IM-sized numbers unless it really makes an IM-sized splash or have impressive post-Christmas legs.

But enough about GL. Warners should've stripped Silver of the WW rights and gave them to someone who knows what they're doing. I still say if Whedon had a different set of producers to answer to when he was attached to direct and write WW back in '07, he would've probably made it to filming by now.

yea i agree there silver may be a good producer on a variety of films but since he hasnt been able to get ww in full movement now for what like 10yrs or so they should have the rights back and give it to someone else who could get it out there. Maybe with their fear of women lead films maybe they should get a bunch of women producers/directors on board and they know what they are doing and all that.

That's a part of it. The fantasy superhero stuff may be another reason. WW's always been a tough nut to crack that's why they need innovators to make it work. They can't put anyone on the project and expect a miracle.

hmm.... my spidey sense still tells me the powers that be is mostly f-ing clueless on how to handle WW hence the delay. not so much with whether or not this is a woman-lead franchise. they know the potential is there, they just dont know how to get a handle on it. and the people they've hired-- Whedon and Silver most notably, are either just as clueless or have different preconceptions of the character.

because lets admit it, when the studios think "woman lead franchise" they think Confessions of a Shopaholic, or Sex and the City, which is a rather archaic and sexist way of looking at the womens' market. the complete opposite side of the spectrum is the "objectified-woman lead franchise" which is most of what Dnno listed (Charlie's Angels et al) which of course doesnt really target the women's market at all truth to be told.

so what about this way: how about making a loosely-based greek mythology movie with a mixture of present day plotlines whose lead character just happens to be a super powered woman? in other words, if you replace the lead as a man, it wouldnt matter in the story because it doesnt pander to one specific market or the other, but as a generally accessible movie to all? case in point: notice how Angelina Jolie's character in Wanted was originally a man in the comics, but was rewritten to fit Jolie. can you guys imagine that role still being filled by a guy, lets say... Gerard Butler?. with the exception of the obligatory nakid bath scene and the kissing thing its easy to imagine a male actor in Jolie's place. now i know its because the character was originally a bloke but thats what i mean about writing a character in a way that it doesnt matter if it was male or female. that can be done for WW, at least this first movie of her franchise. once they got enough momentum from the first film then you can start adding the more female-icon aspects of her franchise (how she's stands up for gender equality et al).

ok this post is longer than i expected. thanks for reading it through to the end for those who did :) :ww:

Whoa, hold on, Jolie's character was a man? I thought it was a black woman(that looked like Halle Berry), who am I thinking of?

If a director went to WB and said "'I want to make a mytholgy based movie about a female warrior", theyd say "you're fired!".

WB cant wrap their heads around WW because they think its all about the tv series, or like Bloodrayne and Resident Evil, and they know they cant risk the huge budget on that kind of film.

No, you're right. The character was a black woman in the comic, not a man.

A mythology based movie - Hollywood is ok.-see Clash of the Titans
Female Warrior- Hollywood is ok.-see Xena, Bloodyrayne, Underworld Evo
A modern day female action flick- Hollywood is ok. see- Underworld, Charlie's Angels, etc.

I want 150 million dollars and combine all three- No

from what i can recall Jolie's character was a man. although i think it was also an amalgam of other characters.

i remember it clearly because Jolie's current project (and one i'm more looking forward to) is Edwin Salt-- which is rewritten to become Eve Salt. its the second male character that was rewritten for Jolie.
