When New Zealand woman Vanessa Horton crashed her car into a river near the family home, her husband had to make the excruciating choice between saving her or rescuing his son, who was trapped in the sinking car.

So the question is: which do you choose .. your wife or your child?

I would save my wife assuming I wasn't mad at her at the time.

My uncle brought this debate to the the kitchen table last month. He chose his wife because that is the person he made a commitment with, though he would try to save both..so he said.

You made a bigger commitment to your child by bringing them into the world.

No. I'm just saying that if I were in the situation (as difficult as it would be,) I would try to save both if possible. Ultimately though, I would have to save my wife.

Ok, to those who would save their "wives" first... why? In deciding to have a child... you forfeit your own life for the safety and well being of theirs... so why abandon the very life you chose to create?

In my view, it's the same situation as when your wife's health is in danger during labor and you have to choose between saving the mother's life, or the life of the child.

I mean this in the most sincere way I possibly can, you can always have more children.

For the Record, the Father did try to go back and save the child, but by then the car was too far into the water to reach him.

Just to add to this story, the man wasnt technically forced with an equal decision....wife or child. He saved his wife because in that particular situation the wife was easier to save. He didnt have to sit there and ask himself...hmmm which one do i want to save?

Hmm... I wonder if actually having children changes people's minds. Being a father, my mindset is that if any harm befalls my child that I would, with no hesitation, sacrifice myself in order to save them. Yes, you could always have more children... but I just could not think of losing my child vs my wife.

Wife vs. child? That's a brutal choice to have imposed upon you, but for the sake of asking: is the child biological, a step-child, or adopted? Also, is this wife no. 1 or 2, 3, 4, etc. . . .

I'm pretty sure that deep down in people's minds, the answer to the question would change concerning the premise.

If we're newlyweds and the child was not mine, I would probably save the wife.

If we had been married for a decade plus with a single child, I would probably save the child.

Um, how old is the child? pre-adolescent, teen, adult child?

If I had been in several marriages before, I would save the offspring and collect the insurance money. Yes. . .yes there would be a life insurance policy: 7 figures+.

I doubt that you would have time to consider all those different factors in that situation.
