The nicknames usually spawn from the period where the murders are unsolved and no one knows the Christian name of the murderer so they find some common thread in the killings to arrive at a way to identify the person. (The Green River Killer, The Zodiac, etc.),

Or, if the identity of the killer is known, but there's a glaring element to the murders, it's just human nature to refer to that element.

For instance, when the fat kid was on the internet doing ballet with his double-sided lightsaber? We can't be bothered to remember his French name...'cause he's not notable for who he is, he's notable for what he did, so...he becomes "The Star Wars Kid".
