...discredit the existence of the Sidhe and other such beings, when there is evidence of their possible existence?
In the old Celtic beliefs, the Sidhe and such beings were fond of abducting human babies and leaving their own in the place of the human baby. There was proof that was supposed to denounce the existence of such creatures:
"The reality behind many changeling legends was often the birth of deformed or ******ed children. Among the diseases with symptoms that match the description of changelings in various legends are spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, PKU, progeria, homocystinuria, William's syndrome, Hurler's syndrome, Hunter's syndrome, and cerebral palsy."
^These are the basic "signs" of a changeling, simply covered up in high falutin medical terminology. Instead of denouncing, this is only proof that such supernal creatures may still exist.
You say, "well, if the child is born with those symptoms, how could they be a changeling?"
Simple: the Sidhe or similar being would invoke a sort of spell that would steal the unborn child from the womb, replacing it with their own.
Think about it.
