I want to preface this with this following:

I am a HUGE horror/sci-fi/comic book geek. However, I don't feel that it is necessary to have a Horror channel, a Sci Fi channel, a video game network etc...I feel that one central hub for all things dork is perfectly fine.

Okay...

There are two zombie series coming to tv...neither to Syfy.

V is back on tv...but not on Syfy.

There are tons of great indie sci fi and horror films, yet Syfy shows the worst movies imaginable.

So, the question is, why can't they get their act together?

I think that Syfy should be the home of everything that you might see at a convention or in the interest realm of the average dork. I'm fine with Ghost Hunters, for instance. Battlestar Galactica/Caprica is apparently a money maker...so why aren't they capitalizing? Why no superhero tv series (Marvel and DC being FULL of characters that would work)? Why no Vertigo titles (Preacher, Y The Last Man, or an anthology)? Why no anthology series like Masters Of Horror/Twilight Zone? I know they tried Flash Gordon, but they removed the Sci Fi elements and turned it to crap. Why not bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000? Why not show Anime on late nights or import films like Old Boy or The Audition? Why not have a news/interview show that covers all of the nerd subjects??

Or maybe I'm wrong and Syfy is already awesome and I just don't get it...

Feel free to throw out ways the channel could improve...

You forgot SyFy shows wrestling now, which is stupid IMO

Superhero cartoons are much easier to do than live action shows, and they wants kids watching so they'll buy the toys. So they'll put the shows on kids channels. And Vertigo just isn't shopping shows around, but movies instead.
Why no anthology series like Masters Of Horror/Twilight Zone?
I think Masters of Horror has been canceled by Showtime and they occasionally do marathons of The Twilight Zone on special occasions.

Why not bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000?
Probably just a hard thing to convince to bring back. A two-hour show about robots watching bad movies. Who's got time for that when you've got Mega Shark vs. Mega Piranha and all the Asylum movies to play?
Why not show Anime on late nights or import films like Old Boy or The Audition?
They don't do Animonday anymore?

Why not have a news/interview show that covers all of the nerd subjects??
They probably feel G4 beat them to it.

Yeah, the only thing worth watching on Syfy is Caprica, as far as I'm concerned.

I just heard SyFy going have a cooking show :(

That's...insane.

I know they have a new show coming soon called Mary Knows Best that is a reality show about the home life of some psychic chick...while I am willing to stretch the boundaries of what the channel offers...this seems a bit over the line.

The thing is, even if Marvel and DC didn't want to play ball, there are still tons of creator owned comics that would work as tv shows.

Stuff like Nexus, Powers, Astro City, Spawn, The Maxx, Vampirella, Dawn, The Rocketeer, Next Men, Turok, Solar, A Distant Soil...even pulp stuff like The Shadow, Buck Rogers, Kull...cartoons of Elfquest, The Tick, Cerebus...off the wall stuff like Milk & Cheese...a Masters Of Horror style anthology from someone like Harlan Ellison...

The point is that there are so many cool concepts already out there and developed...and instead we get reruns of shows that were canceled 20 years ago in prime time.

I think McFarlane has been trying for years to get Spawn back on television, but legal matters have prevented it. Whenever it comes back, I'd like it to go back to HBO, where it can be as graphic as the original cartoon.

Unfortunately every channel that was originally geared towards something specific has decieded to change to the norm to try to keep up with the times which is why it sucks.

Many many years ago
When I was just a lad
The Sci Fi channel showed all kinds of things
Not just the latest fad

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Wonder Woman and the Hulk
Now we get wrestling
And shows on how to cook

I used to love the channel
Now I want to cry
I really love science fiction
But all we get is SYFY

They don't even try to be a decent sci fi channel.

That's the reason they suck.

and them resorting to wrestling shows is downright insulting.

All i can say is that i agree with you. Their programing leaves a lot to be desired. I like your suggestions.

I only tune into SyFy to watch Sanctuary, Warehouse 13, and Eureka, and some reruns.

I've never really forgiven them for cancelling MST3K.

The network almost prides itself on being awful. The only time I watch is on New Year's Eve/Day when they show old episodes of The Twilight Zone.

i quite watching syfy long time ago back in 2000.i did cheeck out wearhouse 13 i liked it. their moives are mostly stupid. they got some good moive. they hadn't been showing any goodshows latly. theymostly been showing moives.

Except the Food Network...they stay the same and other channels are copying them for some reason. The Travel Channel is basically a Food Network clone, and one of the other channels...I forget which one...is changing their name to The Cooking Channel and overhauling their programing completely. Does food really draw ratings that big??

The History Channel has basically turned into the Nostradamus network...every freaking show they have is about the end times or some lost Bible text...which is a far cry from a few years ago when every show they had featured Hitler.

Sci-Fi is such a broad category (and gets so diverse with fandom at conventions) that it makes no sense to change. Lost is sci fi...superheroes...no one would think twice about a Lord Of The Rings type show on Syfy...or horror. I think you might have some issues if it stretched all the way to like, The Lone Ranger or Zorro...but most other types of fun concepts have a sci fi angle to them.

Cooking is big with the stay at home moms and some dads and women in general and some men. So im not surprised.

And ya Sci-Fi is broad but you would think that would only help them have a ncie broad catergory of shows.

Syfy started to suck when it stopped being about, well Sci-fi. Like MTV and Cartoon network before it, it walked away from its mission when ratings plateaued. Plain and simple, the market for a sci-fi network peaked and now they must go elsewhere for profits. Sci-fi shows cost too much money to make, so they go for lower

The TV audience is so fragmented in the 500 channel universe it's almost impossible for anyone to gain any ground, so now the networks are encroaching on each others territory so they can make ratings numbers.

The only good show on SyFy is Stargate Universe.

Morg, for some reason watching your avatar, my mind was slowing everything down like the scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High when that girl is getting out of the pool?

I watch Ghost Hunters and Scare Tactics and most of the reruns. Eureka is great and I like some of the Stargate stuff.
