Superman Returns Why Don't Some Superman Fans Like Superman Returns?

Most superhero adaptations are like that. Things happening differently, etc. They went for a personal story instead another CGI supervillian punches the hero and vice versa average movie; they had to have Superman doing weird stuff; as they did in SII (Superman quitting his mission, revealing his identity etc).

For me it was the exact opposite. No more cliché lines, chessy one-liners and predictable stories for a while. Some serious story with a serious look at the hero for once. Superman is from another planet and yet he never ever feels like a stranger? Can't buy it; let's see when he feels when he's alone, not saving planes with his fists on his hips. Doesn't mean he can't handle it or he's going to the shrink.

I'm glad there wasn't really any cheese. Spider-Man 3 suffered for its cheesy dance sequences. But there is some cliche material in SR - the opening scene with Lex swindling the widow as lightning flashes in the background, like some bad late-night TV movie on a cable channel, was very cliche and a little corny.

I felt the movie was also a little anti-climactic. Even though the climax contained the drama of Superman throwing the island into space, falling to earth and nearly dying, it felt a little 'flat' on screen. It's like the budget ran out...or the sense of energy and tension ran out. It's a little like X2 where the original climax (Sentinels) had to be changed because there wasn't enough money, so the final sequences at the dam do feel a little flat. The lack of a tidal wave sequence in Metropolis (with Superman rescuing a train and people) to give us what writers and film-makers call 'rising action' (a step up from the earlier plane rescue) does feel a little obvious.

I will be interested to see what Singer has in mind for the next movie, I just hope the public are interested too! It will seem strange if they use that Krypton sequence in the sequel... I just think it's such a shame that didn't make it into the movie, even in an edited form, to really show the sense of loneliness for the character, the sense of being the last of his kind. I'd rather the childhood flashbacks had been cut.

Perhaps I should have been more clear. Not his motivation for helping others, but his motivation in his actions toward Lois, the woman he loves.

In "For Tomorrow" he is going to save Lois and a million other people he feels he has a chance of saving. He is going to save the woman he loves, the most important person in his life, no one else is as important to him as she is.

In SR, he ditches Lois without a word. THe woman who is the most important person in his life does not rate a goodbye. Can she really be that important? Can he really love her and have her best interests at heart?

These situations seem similar in one respect, but COMPLETELY different in reference to Lois.

She and Kal haven't had the best relationship over the past few years have they?

But in "For Tomorrow" he's not turning his back on the woman he loves, the most important person in his life, the woman he's having a sexual relationship with.

That makes all the difference in the world. In "FOr Tomorrow" it wouldn't matter if it was a million people or jus Lois, he would still go to try and save Lois, that's what love is about, you care for them more than anyone else. Clearly, in SR, Superma is not caring for Lois more than anyone else, otherwise he would have said goodbye and explained what he was doing.

He's turning his back on loved ones and earth though so it is the same basic principle. And again like SR, he doesnt know how long it will take or if he is coming back OR what he will find if he gets there.

THat's interesting! So he clearly considers it his fault they all disappeared and he's trying to fix his mistake becasue he's taking RESPONSIBILITY for his actions.

Yes, but his only motivation for doing it is he wants Lois back, understandable, but also what you would probably call selfish as even Superman doesnt know if he will make the situation worse or not. He basically puts lives at risk by doing what he does, hence why WW fights him and tries to stop him.

can't superman screw up? big time? he was too excited to find that krypton intact, no time for verification, didn't care about consequences, couldn't wait any longer and had to return immediately.

so can it say this way that the major problem is the lex's land scheme, and back to the lack of action scenario?

Actually, i've just re-read FT and The Vanishing is actually NOT Superman's fault, nor did he design the machine that caused it. When The Vanishing happened, Superman was half a galaxy away so it really was nothing to do with him.

Also, as to who created the machine, it wasnt Superman but he says something to the effect of "Only one person on earth has the intellegence to create such a machine." Maybe Emil Hamilton?

What is the idea of giving him an illegitimate kid?
despite what other people will say, all a par of his idea for a sequel to Superman 2 he was running around telling everyone on any of his movie sets who would listen to him according to Kevin Spacey.

1) The whole super baby daddy idea was just stupid.

2) The movie and characters had no heart-not "Perry White" played by that corpse lookin' dude, not "Jimmy", not anyone particularly Kate Boworths Lois- who sadly lacked the wonderful spirit depicted by Margot Kidder. Kidder as Lois was not MY type but I respected that Clark loved her. and i liked what margot brought to the character. I thought lois in SR was a cold, unsatisfied, waste of time-no wonderful nuances from anyone .

3) wierd pervy henchmen eyeballing the kid

4)the beating of Superman was more painful to watch than Boys Don't Cry-and should never have happend.

5) lack of editing long as pointless scenes

6)stalker superman

7) clark drinks beer

8) costume -I think Singer had the hots for Routh.

9) fx did not impress because the movie around it was not impressive

10) dark tone, somber tone

11) why would lex want real estate on some big muddy ass rock?

the whole thing about the reeves movies was that "they made you believe" . SR didn't. it was a Sorid copy made on a bad printer-and much was lost. I seriously fell asleep at one point. I would've walked out if I was by myself.

Did anyone notice how the camera kept going to Lois' ass, and Kate Bosworth has no ass at all?

Bosworth is just one of many actresses today who have no ass. It's a terrible epidemic. They don't have much in the way of cleavage either.

As usual, a bare statement. The back up? Very well, thanks for asking.

Effort man.

In SR Lois is supposed to be that way, after Superman left her and she didn't know whether he was going to come back or not, trying to move on.

And this was the best Jimmy Olsen ever.

Perry? Yeah, I guess Cooper was better.

3) wierd pervy henchmen eyeballing the kid

Stop watching those perverts' movies and commenting them in a SR board. There was no pervy henchmen in SR; your mind out that in there.

*trembling* "Mummy... that bad man... he played the piano with me..."
"Where did he touch you"
"Right on the keys... *cries* white... and black ones... bwaaahahahah"

4)the beating of Superman was more painful to watch than Boys Don't Cry-and should never have happend.

Superman II, nuff said.

Well, Spiderman, Spiderman 2, Spiderman 3.

5) lack of editing long as pointless scenes

like...?

6)stalker superman

Let's see...

stalk (FOLLOW) Show phonetics
verb
1 [T] to follow an animal or person as closely as possible without being seen or heard, usually in order to catch or kill them:
The police had been stalking the woman for a week before they arrested her.

Superman didn't do in order to catch her or kill her and didn't follow her. Ruled out.

2 [I or T] to illegally follow and watch someone, usually a woman, over a period of time:
He was arrested for stalking.

It wasn't over a period of time.

Now we can consider Superman stalks Lois by being Clark; Superman in a secret disguise learning things from her, she not knowing who he is, then using those things as Supeman to flirt to her. Then he has been doing since forever in comics and movies. Part of the character.

3 [T] LITERARY If something unpleasant stalks a place, it appears there in a threatening way:
When night falls, danger stalks the streets of the city.

It wasn't in a threatening way.

stalker Show phonetics
noun [C]
a person who illegally follows and watches someone, especially a woman, over a period of time:
Several well-known women have been troubled by stalkers recently.

Not over a period of time, unless we consider the Clark issue again.

Language goes against your point.

7) clark drinks beer

So does Jimmy. And Lois smokes cigarrettes and Perry smokes cigars and some journalists at the Planet seem to drink to much coffee.

Your point... ?

8) costume -I think Singer had the hots for Routh.

Again your pervy mind putting its own perviness somewhere else.

9) fx did not impress because the movie around it was not impressive

Nevertheless they were very good. Better than Spiderman 1 plastic Spidey shots.

10) dark tone, somber tone

There were humour and a positive aspect. At this point you're repeating things you've heard maybe. SR wass not Hulk dark tone or even Batman dark tone.

11) why would lex want real estate on some big muddy ass rock?

Because he would get paid lots for that.

the whole thing about the reeves movies was that "they made you believe" . SR didn't. it was a Sorid copy made on a bad printer-and much was lost. I seriously fell asleep at one point. I would've walked out if I was by myself.

No problem here. Some people can-t stand a movie when they have to follow a story and prefer CGI explosions and no character develoment. there are tons of movies like that so it's no problem.
