Superman Returns The Official Superman Returns Discussion

Sorry AVEITWITHJAMON but I gotta disagree. The problem with SR's is that its only good in parts, the 3rd act was good up until he'd finished lifting New Krypton but it wasnt superb it really lacked the drama that went into the plane scene (which is the best scene by a mile and actuallymy favourite scene of any movie ever), the final scenes in a movie should be the best and in SR's they werent. The whole death bit just dragged the movie out and I've never disliked a character as much as I disliked Lois Lane in this movie.

I'll agree on the aftermath of the 3rd act, the last 5 mins or so, a lot of it was unnecessary, and could have been a lot more emotional, and should have perhaps. But everything from when the missile with the crystal in hit the water until Superman crashes back down to Earth was superb, and IMO the most he acts like Superman in the whole movie.

I particularly found from the moment the Kryptonite is removed from his back in the plane right through to his unconscious descent back to earth to be very powerful stuff and some of the best scene's in any comic book movie. BUT it was not the best way to end a summer blockbuster, if only this movie had been released at Christmas I think it would have done better.

I think all the reasons for SR's dissapointment have been mentioned but I'll post my thoughts still.

At first after watching it I felt sort of unsatisfied with the movie but I went ahead and got the DVD, now four years later my feelings on it remain the same.

Basically Bryan Singer did the movie as a thank you to Richard Donner's films and what he thought the general audience wanted after a 20 year wait for Superman on the screen....a continuation of the same formula.

Only thing wrong with it is that a lot had changed in the 20 years that Superman went through many changes that newer fans who weren't familiar with Donner's films couldn't pick up on the subtle references in SR.

Couple with the fact that for a superhero movie there wasn't that many action scenes and throwing in the kid into the story didn't feel necessary, the story dragged in a few parts and it didn't help that certain dialogue was rehashed from STM (still the safest way to travel, you shouldn't be smoking Ms. Lane).

The modifications on the costume weren't necessary, high collar, dark red, thick soles, skimpy briefs, plastic 'S' logo, Superman's plastic headpiece.

Yeah, I agree with a lot of this, all of the Donner references werent necessary, you can say your thankyou, by all means, but give something for the new fans to embrace as well, I think thats were the movie may have lost some repeat viewings.

I agree a Christmas release would have earned them more dollars and we might have gotten a sequel.

I like the 3rd act just think it needed a fight or at least for Superman to fight back. I really wish Singer had gotten Jude Law to agree to play Zod, I wonder how different this movie would have been.

Good discussion so far. My problem with the third act was that it's basically the characters just going back-and-forth-and-back-and-forth to Lex's death continent.

I'm working on an extended review to try to crack this movie open and examine it thoroughly. There's still a lot of work to do, but it's coming along.

The problem was the story. Period. iT ****ING SUCKED. The story was boring, soap-operish, un-original, untrue to the character, the villain wasn`t worth a damn, his plan was ridiculous, actors lacked any kind of chemestry and charisma. I can go on and on. The only scene worth of a Superman movie was the plane sequence and that was completely written by JJ Abrams.

But all in all, Singer`s idea for the movie was just plain misguided.

Personally, I'm a little disappointed by the general dislike of the movie by the comic book world. I thought it was a great movie. I do see however, how people didn't like it due to it's lack of action. I mean, the younger generation can't stand anything that doesn't constantly keep their attention for more than five seconds. I mean, singer should have had bigger explosions and constant action. Someone bigger with more muscles should have played Superman. Maybe someone like the Rock, or perhaps another former pro wrestler.

That being said, I suppose there could be a bit more action in a Superman movie. I really don't see a reason we should throw out SR though. Keep Routh at least. Personally, I didn't mind him having a son. I still don't see what the big deal is with that. It seemed kind of pointless, but, I think it did two things. First, it solidified that Lois actually had feelings for Supes, and second it was obviously a set up for the next movie.

Fine, get rid of Singer (though I think he made a fine movie), but no reboot! Hollywood is getting re-boot happy. So irritating.

I completely agree with you wyltk75. I've been disappointed by this hate too. I do not understand at all. Beyond, completely beyond my limits of understanding.
Alright, I thought we should start a thread for discussing Superman Returns so we don't anger the mods any farther.

So let's post our opinions here.
Loved the movie. I think it was an incredible take on Superman even if there were too many Donner allusions for my taste. But then again, that is what people wanted. People considered C.Reeves as irreplaceable, so I suppose all those who were dying for the same product had what they wanted.
I thought the movie was clever, especially Superman. Good action stuff, sensible characters, and for ONCE no punching. Wow, a premiere!

This said, I was not very comfortable with the brown-red of the uniform, not THAT comfortable with Lois and Perry, and above all I disliked the idea of Superman's child.
I try to avoid thinking about this when I watch the movie.

Agreed with both of you, I still to this day find it a really good watch, and it will always be the movie that got me into Superman as a character. I like the fact the that the action in the movie is a little more 'personal,' its a nice change from the comic book movies that now try and fit TOO much ridiculous action in just to please the masses, and this is coming from someone who loves a good action scene.

Would still love to see the RTK sequence though as I feel it would add a lot to the movie.
