Superman Returns Why Don't Some Superman Fans Like Superman Returns?

So what, plenty of movies go over budget, Iron Man, which you praise so much despite the fact you havent seen it, had an original budget of $120, yet ended up costing at least $15 million more, that means SHOCK, HORROR, it went over budget! OH MY GOD STOP THE WORLD.
Yeah and it will make that money back easily. The budget is down enough where it will. SR's budget was through the roof. And NO, it is not common for a movies budget to go over. Those directors of lots of movies that go over budget have a hard time getting things greenlit after that. Stephen Summers was tapped to do three films before Van Helsing was released. The studios yanked all of them after that and he is just now making movies again. And if it does, it better make a profit. Had Titanic not made what it did, James Cameron was finished. And Bryan Singer is not in a good light with Hollywood right now going over budget on two films. I can tell you that if that movie doesn't do well, he is back to doing smaller films.

I agree with you. They practically showed almost every action sequence in the trailers and TV spots. They just didn't market the movie right, IMO. I think that's why some people were turned off by it.

The third act just didn't do much for me. At that point, I really didn't care what happened. After he threw the island in space, I think it should have ended there. Instead it dragged on for 20 more minutes with Superman in the hospital. In the hospital! I just can't figure out what Singer was thinking here. I'm sure most will disagree with me.
Yeah it sucks when 250 mill movie has all of its action in the trailer. What action there was. And I like what the one reviewer for EW put it best. Paraphrasing "I fell asleep 20 minutes into it and when I woke up he was doing battle with a giant rock" Yeah.

The trailers just didnt generate interest in the movie, plain and simple, i thought they were extremely poor, and they were almost non existant here in Liverpool.

Superman in the hospital was to show he is vulnerable, and it was also to echo things like the JFK assasination, with the people waiting outside the hospital, etc. I thought it was a very touching scene, humanity finally got to pay Superman back for all he had done for them.

Can i ask, did you buy your time machine or make it? I doubt JC would have been finished had Titanic tanked, EVERY one of his previous movies had been successful, as for Singer not being in a good light in Hollywood at the moment, does it really matter?

And yes, plenty of movies do go over budget, there are countless examples.

I know. To me, that "bullet to the eye" scene was the coolest thing in the movie.

Yep. I don't know if they could ever accomplish that in STM. That what great about CGI technology nowdays than back in late 70s. :)

which is why it would have been soooo much cooler to have a super-powered battle between Supes and a villain.

Think the fight between Supes and Zod and co. in SII........now imagine what they could have done with today's technology.............

a shame......what a wasted opportunity.....

I don't think the problem was lack of action, I think there are two other problems that make it seem like this. One was pacing; the movie just seemed to flatline, as opposed to building tension in peaks and troughs and having any kind of development. It just kind of trudged along. The first two X-Men movies did this too. The second problem was that the action just wasn't that good. With the exception of the plane rescue scene, which frankly was one of the best Superman scenes in any film, I found the action scenes to be a bit boring; they ware either not challenging for Supes, not challenging for the audience, or in the case of the New Krypton scenes, far too challenging for Supes to be believed.

Actually, just out of interest, I have a quick question. Does anyone NOT think that Bosworth was terrible?

My reasons are
1. Lack of super-villain- after all this time with todays technology to finally get a new live-action Superman movie and not have a super-villain in it is a big let down
2. The child sub-plot- I didn't have a problem with them giving Superman a kid, but the way they handled it was all wrong.
3. ???Sequel/Remake/Vague Sequel???-With everything they used from Donner's movie this really felt like a sequel to Superman 1 and 2, to find out it's not a sequel but set in the same universe makes no sense and is just ridiculous. With all the Superman material that has been released over the years there is no good excuse for going this way.

I just watched the Superman: Doomsday animated movie again last night.....and...boy.....I sure wish we could have gotten THAT as our live action Superman movie. :(

Sure, I had some problems with parts of Doomsday ( hey, no movie is perfect ).....but when I watched it again......I found myself saying......"NOW THAT'S A SUPERMAN MOVIE!!"

I just had to ignore the fact that it was a FR***** CARTOON!!

Haha! That reviewer is spot on. Where did all the money go? I'm guessing the advertisement played a factor in that.

I feel sorry for you guys in the UK then. You would expect much more advertisement for something as big as Superman.

I understand what you mean, but I just didn't get it honestly. It was touching in a way, but by that time I just didn't care and wanted the movie to end.

I know

They only really show cased his Super Strength by having him lift a bunch of things.

So he used his breath and his eye beams ..... but not in a major way...:(

It really wasn't just the action that had me hooked. Christopher Reeves was just fantastic in the role. Those movies had moments where you actually cared for the characters. It had heart. S2 had the fight against THREE super villains. That to me was so much better than any action scene in SR, IMO.

In SR, it was the opposite for me. The plane rescue was nice to look at, but that's about it. Cool effects don't make a great movie. It was bad enough that WB pretty much gave away the whole scene from the TV spots.

OK, thank you for responding. Sorry you didn't like SR. Can I understand it? NO. No, because to me SR is a wonderful film that offers much more than just 'action.' It made me care about Superman again. I wasn't a fan like most people here, but I always liked him over the other superheros. But with SR i literally fell in love with him, and made me appreciate what it might be like to be Superman if he existed in real life. To me, SR has fine acting, good story that is timeless and classic, great score, wonderful imagery, lots of subtext, good cast, especially Brandon Routh, who truly made me believe that he was Superman and that a man can fly.

Yes, Reeve was wonderful, but so is Routh for me, and many others. Again, sorry You didn't like the movie, but that doesn't mean that it is a bad film. It just means that You didn't particularly enjoyed it. I'm so glad I did. IMO, SR truly honours the character and the legend that is Superman, just like All-Star Superman (the comic book) does.

Note: No film is good or bad only subject to the viewers opinion.

I thought the way he used his other powers was great in the movie, his breath and eye beams were both used for major rescue sequences in the movie.

Yeah they looked great but he needed to be using them on a villain :)

i hope you're right. that fellow was way over-rated and he should stick to do film with his lovely sidekicks.

THey were also used in a limited fashion. However, the one eyebeam scene to me was more exciting than the rest of the movie.

I am a huge Superman fan. This was the best superhero movie along with Batman Begins and Spiderman.
Everyone is too hard on the suit. There really is no way to make wearing underwear outside your pants look manly.
Also, about the bastard child and him leaving the kid behind. In case you missed it, he left earth without knowing she was pregnant.
About leaving earth, why would he tell anyone? So the criminals could run wild?

I liked that they made him strong again. I recent Supes adaptations they made him weak. (S-man cartoon & Justice League cartoon. I personally thing Wonder Woman being even close to Superman's strength is insulting)
He threw a continent into space. That was the strength I am used to.

I thought it had good action. The plane, the ship and the Metropolis scenes we awesome.

What I didnt like, the plot was too much like Superman 1.
Also, the last 15 minutes of the movie are not even worth watching.

I can't wait to see him face a super villain in the next movie.

You've got a lot of discussion to catch up on.

I think you really don't know much about Wonder Woman.

Enlighten me if you would, dasam12. Exactly how would it help criminals run wild, if he told Lois, in confidence, about his off world plans?
