Why is unforgiven considered such a good movie?

It's entertaining and well acted?

Because it's Clint Eastwood. By default, everything he does is good. Even the ****** stuff.

because it has a great story about justice, guns, and getting old

His 1970s westerns are better. Outlaw Jose Wales beats this by far.

its a very different tone from Outlaw Josey Wales...thematically, its what happens when a character like Josey Wales or the Man with no name gets older and has to figure out what his life has been about

I liked it because it showed how a man with a sinful past (unlike the mysterious Man With No Name) stands up for some principles in a town that compromised theirs. Of course, that's not entirely unique to Clint's past roles but the townspeople were truly repugnant towards those women.

It's been such a long time since I've seen it, so I can't offer up my own opinion of it as a film, but I will try and remark on its popularity. I think the biggest appeal is that it was Clint's swan song in the western genre, and it was very well-done. When a movie like that, one that commemorates a legend and his body of work, turns out to be good, the reverence for that movie goes through the roof. Like I said, it's been a while since I've seen it, but from what I remember, it is very much deserving of the praise it gets.

I think scifiwolf's explanation is pretty good... I really didn't find anything enjoyable in the film myself, but to each his own.

I like it because it's like some dark violent, and lonely song. An old bastard who loved this woman of virtue to the point that even after her unfair death, bottles up his nature, and finally gives in when he loses his last remaining friend. It's more poetic and artistic than anything he did in a long time, and it's kinda hard to watch because it feels so isolated and cold. Cold just like Money riding away in the rain.

I really hope he does some more Westerns before we lose him.

its hardly the best western film, nor is it eastwoods best, but its a damn good solid movie that is thoroughly entertaining. it may be a bit over rated, but its a quality film.

That pretty much says it. Eastwood played a former scoundrel. An outlaw who found redemption thanks to his late wife. He tries to stay out of trouble, but when the corrupt sherrif played by Gene Hackman crosses a line with him, old habbits die hard.

The movie kind of reminds me of the origin story of the Saint of Killers in the PREACHER comic series... but, ya know, without all the supernatural elements(though I do believe Eastwood could shoot the devil dead)

Because Eastwood is a crusty old bastard that still kicks ass. He is the constant underdog in this film. He puts up with a lot of crap. At the end[blackout] he comes back and wipes out an ignorant bully and a loudmouth.[/blackout] Who does not like to see that once in a while?

- Masterful camera work
- Faultless script/engrossing revenge tale
- Incredible locations and set design
- Divine performances by the entire cast (especially Harris and Hackman)
- Haunting score

Unforgiven is my all-time favorite film, so its best that I keep this post simple and avoid any emotional back-and-forths between someone who may not see things the way I do :P

This..Plus u can't go much wrong with Clint,Morgon Freeman and Gene Hackman.

How is Unforgiven overrated? If you don't like it personally, I understand. But I think it delivers as a Western and certainly deserves its place as one of the all time best of the genre.

Yeah...

Gene hackman was great in this movie. I love the final shootout . Also with good westerns so few and far between that may have helped it get so much praise.

i also think Unforgiven was special because it was Clint's farewell to Westerns. He hasn't done any since...
