WiiU

Happy to read all of this. Anyone see that Nintendo may be considering a name change for the WiiU? It was on Attack of the Show the other night.

Yeah. They said that the 3DS had some people confused if it was a new thing or just a DS update. They don't want the same thing to happen and people to just think this is a new Wii.

I just want them to go back to their roots.. No stupid name like Cube or Wii.. NES II.. Or like Soapy said... Just keep the NES part.

I miss the Nintendo being mandatory in the name. You didn't have that with the Wii, DS, 3DS, or WiiU. The NES had that (erroneously referred to as the Nintendo), the Super NES (Super Nintendo) had that. The Nintendo 64 had that. The GameCube not so much. At least it FELT like a Nintendo system. In more ways than the Wii ever did. Nintendo HD? I'm find with that name. Its just so simple, so effective.

Outside of marketing, does the name really matter?

Yes.

Also, apparently there was confusion over the 3DS and Wii...just read the earlier posts.

People are morons. You need something to catch their interest. Playstation, Xbox...those have become what people think of when referring to video games. Nintendo is still there, but when it comes to parents buying **** for their teen kids and what not, yeah.

I wasn't really fond of the "Wii U" branding of the new console, but from a business standpoint, it makes a lot of success to piggyback off of the success to the Wii.

I do think that the people getting confused is getting blown out of proportion. I mean, I've never heard people being confused about PSX, PS2, or PS3. The same goes for Xbox. I think if they decide to keep it, they'll be fine.

But with the Wii, people got the image of a system that was made for a certain demographic of gamer; the so-called casual gamer and motion-controller gamer. Other groups of gamers didn't gravitate towards the Wii the same way they did with the PS3 or 360. If Nintendo wants to cater to the PS3/360 fans that found very little out of the Wii, and if Nintendo is promising a more structured, more hardened appeal, then calling the system the Wii _____, keeping that "Wii" name which is stigmata'd with stereotypes of everything the PS3/360 crowd didn't care for, is only going to suggest "Hey! Its the Mii series of games all over again...and not much else." That may not be the case, but that's the image their projecting with the Wii brand.

Ok good post, but I need to go on a little off topic rant here.
Why do people call the PS1 the PSX? It's not. In no official material has it ever been called that. A PSX is a digital video recorder made by Sony with a PS2 built in to it. I see it so used much, and I don't know why.
How does the name make sense anyway? What the hell does the X stand for. What does it have to do with a console that, when fully written out, is PlayStation. Nothing more, nothing less.

Ok rant over. :word:

That's what they called it in Japan before its release. It stuck with some of the more hardcore gaming community I guess.

PS1 was never called the PS1 until the pS2.. I've always called it the PSX and will continue to.

Similar question is why was the Nintendo GameCube abbreviated to GCN (GameCube Nintendo?) instead of NGC or just GC?

Another mystery solved thanks to the SHH! Detective Agency. Now let's give a hardy laugh and freeze frame as the end credits roll. :awesome:

As for a name, yes include Nintendo in it and I wouldn't mind if they went back to naming it the Nintendo Entertainment System. Hell just stick that 'U' from WiiU in front of it and call it the ULTRA! NES or UNES. I just pray, if true, it's good.

Yeah, but the stigma is such a small percentage when compared with the success that the Wii branding created.

It was referred as PSX during the developmental phase of PlayStation. It always stuck.

Yeah, but it was never called that... ever, except early marketing. Oh well if people wanna call it that, it's fine, just irritates me because it makes no sense.

So it was never called that ever, except early marketing... So.. At one point in time it was called that.

There was a PSX magazine that later became PSXtreme. I was a very early adopter of the PSX... I remember everyone calling it that. I also remember the old school DVD game cases.

Oh wow, I remember those. I think my Twisted Metal was packaged like that.

So I suppose it's fine for me to call the N64 the Nintendo Ultra 64?

...

Eh, call it whatever you want. I'll get back on topic, since it's obviously something people have done since they were kids. I can't judge, I still pronounce Ryu wrong.
