Everyday I get a prompt to update my Windows 7 (which i adore) to Windows 10 and apparently the last day to upgrade for free is Jun 29.

For those of you who have made the switch, how are you liking it?

I hated Windows 8 with a passion. I don't like the tiles

I am a heavy user of tags on my computer for all my files and documents. Is this feature available or easily accessible on W10?

It's pretty good. There are hiccups mainly on Edge and some tiles. But it's stable enough to use for daily computer needs. I use it on my gaming PC and haven't experienced any problems.

what kind of hiccups? Edge is the new browser right? i've heard its way better than IE

It is way better, but I've been having issues with lag from the Hype, especially. It has also crashed once or twice. But that could be my drivers on my computer causing the problems. Tiles will stop displaying information or lose their icon (I haven't experienced it since I updated, though). The good thing is 10 is constantly updated, so if there's an issue just use the Feedback app and hopefully it will get fixed in the next build.

I like Windows 10 overall.

I still dislike using IE - but I still use it for now because I feel the Edge browser isn't quite ready for use. You can't use extensions or toolbars, for example. Though, it's my understanding that extensions will be coming in the big summer Update.

I hope that's the case, because I would really like to switch totally away from IE.

You can get Adblocker now if you're part of the Insider Build.

cant i use Opera or Firefox if i make the upgrade? those are the two browsers i use most

I use Firefox sometimes. but I'm just so used to IE so that's why I still use it......lol.

but it keeps crashing all the time.

I dont like windows 10... Even more confusing than 8!

BTW does anyone know how many posts I have to make before you are allowed to Make threads? I kind of came here to make threads about Gotham but I guess I dont have enough posts to do so.

the user interface is good but i experienced some bugs, and now i'm thinking of going back to windows 7

is there a way i can install it and not have it immediately upgrade?

I just bought Surface Pro 4. Apparently it comes with Windows 10 Pro. Would it be already installed or would I have to do that when I get it? I just want it to be ready soon after it arrives as I'll be away from home straightaway.

It's preinstalled so all you have to do is set it up to your liking and log in through a local account or your Microsoft account.

Excellent, thanks.

If you have Pro, you should have the option to stop automatic updates.

bah

i just wanna download it and have it saved on my computer somewhere, then upgrade when i'm ready lol

I read somewhere, not sure where, that if you upgrade to Windows 10, you can then revert back to your old OS. Then at a later date you can go back to Windows 10 if you want to use it at that point.

if that's true, i might finally cave and download the thing

I find Windows 10 to be a step down from Windows 8 in some ways, and an improvement in other ways. The boot time is not as swift as Windows 8, but it is still faster than Windows 7, Vista, and XP. The Start Menu is still trash because of live tiles, but in terms of UI design and following the basics of human interface guidelines, Windows 10 is far more usable with a mouse than Windows 8. Cortana is an excellent virtual assistant, but Microsoft gathers WAY too much user data in order to sell said data to third-parties. As such, I never use Cortana and don't connect a mic to the Windows 10 PC in my house.

For all of the "meh" of Windows 10, I still recommend getting the upgrade for the sake of security updates, and future compatibility for apps/games. If you loathe live tiles and the new Start Menu as much as I do, I recommend that you purchase a copy of StartIsBack for $3. StartIsBack is a mod tool that enables the traditional Windows Menu from the Vista/7 era. Once you have that tool installed, Windows 8 and 10 become highly usable for those more accustomed to the traditional desktop PC workflow.

i had Clamshell or something like StartIsBack on Windows 8

i hate live tiles, i hate cortana/siri or anything like that so i would never use them and i don't want to give them access to data. they want way too much user data like you said above, which is ironic to me due to it apparently being so much safer and secure

Oh you want to save it and install it later. :O

I believe you can do this, but I'm sure there's an expiration for that upgrade license come July.

I just received the Surface Pro and liking the larger screen (had smaller iPad before). The pencil thing is pretty cool too.
