Windows 10

Edge is behaving much better in the Redstone/Anniversary builds. I have not experienced any crashes or devastating hiccups yet. The addition of Adblock Plus also makes my browsing experience all the more delightful.

that's good to hear.

I actually just installed Adblock Plus on IE and it has cut down on all those annoying ads ( including the ones on this site! ).

Well it's working just fine and dandy here. :D

The interface is wonderful, but sometimes it runs rather slow, even slower than windows 7, it makes me frustrated. It takes a long time to turn off the computer sometimes.

I'm still experiencing problems with my display driver, but I honestly believe it's Samsung's fault for not having drivers that are ready for Windows 10.

i just got the message that last day i can upgrade for free is july 29

will windows 7 be obsolete after that?

Kind of a tricky question. It will still be supported but it is already technically obsolete.

At some point it will stop getting supported and at that point I would call it actually obsolete. It's still used widely for now though.

i still can't find out for sure if Windows 10 has the Tags feature. this is a MUST-HAVE for me

Tags feature, as on Windows TABS? The "edge" still does on my pc, but I use Firefox to browse online. Search wise Cortana isn't bad at find things on pc's (there are times I hate calling the search engine Cortana Like Black widow didn't like calling "that thing" Red-wing) lol

Cortana is Bing as in Bing wanted to become a human and chose a female (hoop) form. :p

not tabs, TAGS lol

for instance, all my photos on my computer have tags. so if i had pictures of you, and i wanted to find them all, i'd type in Vartha in my search bar and all the photos i have with Vartha tagged to them would come up

Be more specific, next time! :p

It appears that the feature was removed or hasn't been added to the new Photos app.

You can change her default to Google if you want, but you don't want Cortana activated at all.

I have a question regarding Win 10.

How exactly does the system work?

Basically, if you run a pirated copy of Win 7 and upgrade to Win 10 BEFORE July 29, your Win 10 won't be genuine.

However, if you run a pirated copy of Win 8 and upgrade to Win 10 AFTER July 29 (and actually pay for the license key and OS after that day), they your Win 10 will be genuine.

How exactly does this work? Shouldn't be your Win 10 in the second case still non-genuine, or it is all about the money and Microsoft will simply "close its eyes" for non-genuine users if they pay the required amount of money to buy their OS, but not do the same when they offer it for free?

Seems like you answered your own question. In the second scenario, they are paying to get the license, so it would make W10 genuine.

On the topic as a whole, I upgraded pretty much instantly as I came from W8/8.1 and I like how W10 is a mix of the good from both 7 and 8. It like it as a whole even if it has some things I don't like. I don't like how they still have legacy menus under all the slick interface though. It's just lazy they didn't integrate the control panel settings into the new settings UI. You're better off skipping creating a Windows Account or whatever it's called because the App Store has nothing of value. If you do install DO NOT use express installation, that will turn on all the "privacy" crap since it's not transparent in that setup. Lastly, it sucks that you can't remove certain apps/programs, or if you can, have to go through reg edits to keep them from coming back. It's annoying and most of your apps suck like Groove and their Photo apps.

TLDR:

Windows 10 is great even if it comes with some ****** practices and services.

I gave in and upgraded yesterday. It was smoother than I expected upgrading but going through all the knobs and switches to deactivate the spyware personalization options took a while and I'm still not sure I got them all. With the Anniversary Edition coming out next week it'll hopefully make it easier to adjust anything I did miss.

Definitely acts, looks and feels better than Windows 8 ever did. Glad I skipped that OS.

According to some of the articles that I have read, Microsoft has admitted that it is impossible to turn of all of the spyware.

So...I'm also joining the bandwagon, giving in and upgrading from W7. Does it take long to download? I started it around 4:30 & it's only half downloaded 2 hours later.

Right, I've got a day left, but I'm not going to do the straight download. I'll probably just pay for it later on in the year, and keep the hard copy if I need to re-install.

That being said, is it possible to download Win10 os on to a USB drive or Iso file to burn to a disk?

Edit: I think I might have answered my own question. I'll look into this - https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

There is an article on pcworld.com that says that there will be an anniversary update in about a week that will prevent Cortana from being turned off.

Even more things you can't turn off. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more to come.

I figured they would pull a stunt like this but there are always ways to mitigate their spying. It just takes finding the right tools and resources to do it.

The Cortana thing does bug me a little.

I just assume absolutely everything I do is filed away and stored somewhere, whatever I think I've turned off.

Windows Central is saying MS combine Cortana and PC search into one. You can sign out of Cortana by selecting your MS account under Notebook to have her stop tracking info about you. If you haven't activated her, simply don't sign in when prompted by her. Now make sure you turn off all her tracking (such as following Web Searches and Device History) under settings. MS just made it more cumbersome to turn off this kind of stuff.

i fought the system and did NOT download this haha
