Hello, currently I have a pc in my bedroom and it has a netgear router attached with it (for my xbox). Today my brother got a laptop and when i go to connect with MY network, the laptop says i need a security key or passphrase.
i dont know what that is and/or how to obtain one.
can anyone help! it would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know how to get into the interface for the router?

Then you are out of luck, someone setup it up with WEP or WPA. You can reset the router back to factory settings, but since you don't know how to use the interface thats probably a bad idea. Was the router provided by whomever you got your internet through, if so contact them.

Go online and see if you can get the owners manual for the type of router you have. This should give you the information on how to login to the interface and how to use it's wireless security settings, which I recommend you use.

Bottom line is you have to log in to the router to get the information you need to connect to the wireless network.

You should call your router company, they should help you out.

If you have a laptop, how the heck do you get an internet connection if you're not near your network?
