The Amazing Spider-Man 2 With Great Sequel Comes Great Lounging - Part 1

At least it seems everyone else enjoyed Man of Steel. For me, it was second rate Christopher Nolan. It tried to do for Superman what Batman Begins did for Batman, but it didn't come close in my mind. And it's not like I'm a Marvel fanboy or anything. I really was looking forward to this movie.

I'll start with some of the things I liked. The following is not spoilery, but just in case you don't want to know ANYTHING...
Visually, it was great- all the special effects were top notch. And I enjoyed a lot of the camera work. Henry Cavill was really well cast even though he didn't get a whole lot to work with. He certainly looks the part perfectly and I think he has a lot of potential to play the duality of Clark Kent/Superman. Also the flashback scenes were well done. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane were both great, and even though not a whole lot of time was spent on those scenes, there was a real sense of warmth, family, and heart. I just wish the rest of the film felt like that.

As for things I didn't like, let's start with...the action. Yes, the action. I admit everything looked great and the scope was suitably massive, but it was just TOO much. The amount of destruction became silly. And there was nothing creative about the fights. It basically consisted of one character punching another character through a building, then that character retaliating by punching the other character through another building. Rinse, repeat. So the action just didn't feel nearly as dynamic as it should have. And when there's so much action, there's no buildup. Eventually there's no anticipation or excitement. It just becomes repetitive and soulless.

Another reason the action didn't work for me is that I didn't care about the characters. I wasn't invested at all. Especially Lois. I like Amy Adams, but she was a cardboard cutout. She just falls for Clark at the snap of the fingers. The romance was just really tacked on. It would have been much better if they left that for the sequel. And there was a real lack of character development. That could have been due to the fragmented storytelling, the overly quick pace, a thin script, whatever.

As for Zod, he was played way over the top. Sometimes that can work, but here it did not. All he did was yell. And yell. And spew bad dialogue. "I TRAINED AS A WARRIOR MY WHOLE LIFE. WHERE DID YOU TRAIN? A FARM??!! Yeah...Faora however was perfectly fine as the second in command.

Now the tone. I like serious films. I didn't want a tongue in cheek Superman, or an Iron Man 3 where there's a joke every two minutes. I wanted something different from this incarnation of the character. And it was serious. TOO serious. There were maybe five instances the whole movie that we're intended to ilicit a smile or chuckle. It was very dry. Very little humor or sense of fun. I know they were going for something else, but it didn't jive with me. The film starts off trying to be grandiose and inspiring and epic, but the script isn't nearly smart enough for that. It's all surface value, no depth, if that makes sense. As one critic said, it was just flat-footed homilies. It aspired to greatness, but it fell way short. In fact, I would say nearly all the good lines were in the trailers. Too bad. And then things just get silly with the over the top destruction and mayhem. It's as if Snyder said, "Forget story. I want to blow things up now." And that he does.

Now, before you guys go calling me a hater, I'm really not. This was my most anticipated movie of the summer. So I'm pretty disappointed. I don't even feel like watching it again.

I LOVED Zod in this film personally. One of the best origin film villains.

His motivations were totally fine and believable. But the way he was portrayed by Micheal Shannon was really...loud. Lol. I think that's what they call scenery chewing. Haha. For me it was too much.

Man of Steel was such a goddamn great film, and I didn't even have a problem with the "controversial" ending.

It's either Zod or humanity, and Superman picked the choice that he was meant to inspire. And also, it killed Kal-El when he had to make that decision, although it brings up the possibility that Zod COULD still come back. Can't a Kryptonian slowly come back to life even after death on Earth or no?

Me neither. Not sure why. I've recently been reading Superman comics about a month and a half now, and don't know much about Superman doing what he did in the ending there but for some reason I just get this gut feeling that this is their version of Supes while staying true to certain source material, and it's not like Supes walked away with a smile you know?

Man, Heat is NOT winning tonight lol. I don't even know why I'm going for Heat. I think it's because I know they're former champions, and they have the rep for being really good, WITH Lebron and what not.

I liked MoS more than most origin films actually.

A visually pleasing film is always easier to like. Even with all the criticism I really doubt that I'll dislike the film myself. With TASM (while I do recognize the other flaws as well) the only problem I can't quite get over with is Lizard's design. Lizard having to speak and having to have a flat face doesn't automatially mean that the design can't be made fierce, just as having a snout wouldn't automatically make the design fierce

Without a doubt I will notice some minor flaws with MoS, but if the film has a lot of good stuff in it and is generally competent, I will enjoy it a lot for sure

I wa just watching TASM but I don't know if anybody noticed this but through Spidey's fights he was using his intellect to defeat Lizard not just strength alone, you can see he's always thinking and moving. I cant believe I didnt notice it before

And going back to the controversial thing in Man of Steel...

Pretty pointless when that gets a stir, but yet this is labeled as the greatest Superman moment ever and Superman kills a POWERLESS Zod!

Haha. Didn't know that. Nice...effects

So I played Castlevania: Lords of Shadows for the first time on PS3. I've played several hours it feels but I'm still only at the beginning of chapter 3. I don't know how many are left.

Anyway, might be one of the most irritating games I've ever played. I thought this should be a great hack 'n' slash game but wow am I wrong.

The combat leaves much to ask for. The graphics are unimpressive. The sound/music is some of the worst I've experienced in a PS3 game ever. The characters are lame. The story is boring. The loading time is long. The platforming is mediocre.

Overall, it's a snooze fest. Much due to the horrible sound and the monotonic gameplay. And I've heard some pretty good stuff about this game before. Ugh!

Yes, by many. A couple posters had a problem with that, too.

I'm not really seeing it, to be honest. To me he was the twisted version of the soldier trying to save his people. He was still a monster. Granted, I enjoyed him either way.

If he was sympathetic because he wanted to re-populate the Kryptonian people, then I guess you could say that. Otherwise, I don't see Zod being a sympathetic villain.

Zod was a crazy guy with a messed up vision of the world, like Ghul.

Not really he just wanted to recreate Krypton , i mean if we had the chance to get another Planet to be just like earth and repopulate again we would do the same, sounds horrible but some would do it he was right in his point of view , he wanted to do what was he created for Protect Krypton and it´s citizens

Well, in a way, one could see it being al Ghul-like. Ra's wanted the people of Gotham to destroy themselves while Zod wanted to destroy humanity and use them for slaves/labor.

Even if I'm a PlayStation guy, Microsoft removing its draconian DRM for the Xbox One is great news for consumers.

Just a random thought.

But he wasn't just acting out that idea of saving his people. He was aving his people, and deciding which bloodlines get to stay in the genetic thingy-whatchadoodle or whatever it's called. It was more of bring back the planet in his own image and rule.
