It's such a shame that TASM 2 didn't reach the heights that we were all anticipating. The main problem seems to be the villain.
So, my main thought of the past few days is what they could have done to improve him. Firstly, i would put his wife into play. His mom would be only there for two or three scenes.
There is an interaction between Smythe and Max, where Smythe orders Max to work overtime. Max explains him that he is supposed to celebrate his wedding's anniversary with his wife. Smythe says that he doesn't care.
The elevator scene follows where Gwen asks him why Max doesn't stand up to himself. Then, we transition to a Max's memory where he is quite young, approximately the age of 6 or 7. He approaches a couple of kids so that he can join the game, but they reject him and they start making fun of him and tease him. Max stands up for himself but he ends up getting a beating. Then we are introduced to his mom, who tells him that he isn't old or strong enough to play with the other kids. We immediately get the sense that his mother is very overprotective over him and that Max is an outcast. After that, we return to present day where he tells Gwen that he tried once, but it didn't end so well and the dialogue between them continues.
Afterwards, we are introduced to his wife, who seems to be very bossy. Max asks her what they have for dinner and she responds that he should cook something himself. After the dinner, they lie on the couch to watch TV and they see an ad regarding Oscorp's power plant. Max's wife anxiously waits to listen to Max's name in the ad, but when that doesn't happen, she becomes very upset. Max doesn't understand that and seems perfectly happy that there is an ad in TV regarding something that he built even if it doesn't feature his name. His wife explains to him that he is not ambitious at all, that he could never get what he wanted, due to his overprotective mother, and that's not the life she wanted.
The following day, Max approaches Smythe and asks him if there was a slight chance his name could be featured in the ad about the power plant since he was the one that built it. Smythe of course makes fun of him and walks away leaving Max disappointed. He returns home and he realizes that his wife has packed her things and she is ready to abandon him. Max literally begs her not to leave her because he doesn't want to be left alone, but at that particular moment, his wife leaves and closes the door of their house behind her. Max stands still for a second and then in an outburst of anger he starts punching the door. Note, that Max doesn't even go after her and try to change her mind. His home is like his cage, a cage that has developed over the years due to his overprotective mother. It's his sanctuary and he is afraid to leave it. This doesn't play any particular role down the line, i just thought that it's a nice little detail to add to his character. Max starts destroying everything in his apartment and that's where Jamie Foxx's acting really shines. We get the sense that Max finally unleashed all the anger that he had inside him all those years. This moment is a catalyst to the events that will follow.
After that, we are formally introduced to his mother. He goes over to her place in order to share his thought and problems. She starts lecturing him, telling him how right she was all along, that his wife didn't suit him, that he is incapable of doing something right, etc. Now, Max starts fantasizing that he grabs a knife and, in a yet another outburst of anger, he starts stabbing her. He, of course, returns to reality.
Another imaginary outburst occurs when Smythe "bullies" him once again. Now, you may ask me, so why doesn't Max actually attack someone? Well, the answer to that question is in the elevator scene. Max tried to stand up to the bullies once , but because he was beaten really hard, coupled with the fact that his mother told him that he isn't capable enough to play with the other kids, he subconsciously realized that he wasn't strong enough to stand up to the bullies. In other words, after his wife left him, his anger resurfaced, but he knew that he didn't have the power to hurt anyone. So, he had these "silent" outbursts. Everything changed when he fell into the tank of eels.
So, that dragged quite a bit. Let me know if you want me to continue.
