Skin does peel from a healing sunburn. And sunburns are easily obtained here in the desert.

Dicaprio and Scorsese themselves have said it doesn't glorify anything. It's supposed to just show how f'ed up they got. Seriously, though. What a great movie. To be honest though, there wasn't all that much LOL humor. I mean, it was funny, but I was more invested in the drama and story.
