Woman kicked off Amtrak train for yappin' on the phone

I've got something against people who think that it's possible to have peace and quiet and that it's everyone else's fault that they can't get it.

We should bomb those libraries next. Who do they think they are, wanting "quiet"?! And movie theaters should have phone-chargers so Lakeysha doesn't run low on her battery. And we should schedule road construction for sleeping hours only.

It was a quiet car. Why is that concept so hard for you to understand? I hope I'm never next to you on a train.

As long as it's not rush hour. I mean if it's wall to wall in there, you can forget it.

:doom: :doom: :doom:

Well, I for one am usually quiet because I keep to myself, but I'm not arrogant enough to think that my quiet trumps other people's freedoms.

And I understand the idea of a quiet car, I just think it's stupid and shouldn't exist.

Then don't sit in the quiet car. We don't want to listen to you there, either.

I won't. I like being around real people and not stuck up asses.

Oh please. Do you commute?

Try commuting with people who are screaming on their phones or playing music that's so loud that you can hear it through their headphones from 10 rows away while you're trapped on the same bus/train with them for over an hour, and you'll understand.

It's not a matter of being stuck up, it's a matter of observing a sense of common courtesy that some people seem to be incapable of.

I love how everything is an infringement of freedom now... even quiet cars.

SuperFerret, do libraries make your blood boil? Do you hate them too?

I'm a New Yorker. That should be sufficient to answer your question. It's also how I apparently have the superpower of being able to ignore simple things like that. Though even that's getting rarer as more and more whiners move into the city.

No, I don't hate libraries. I don't hate quiet cars either, I hate the people who have this idea that they can dictate where and when I can speak.

So you're not a commuter then. :cwink:

Btw, I'm also from NY. And I know damn well that we don't put up with loud jerks on their phones when it's supposed to be quiet.

Hell, I've been to Yankee games where the entire bleacher section stood up and chanted "CELL-PHONE ***HOLE!" at a guy until he hung up the damn thing.

This is New York...we stop Broadway shows here if you are obnoxious with your phone:

Which would also include the library. :whatever:

Oh, so you're one of those New Yorkers. You make me sick. :yay: We used to have a reputation for being tough, resilient people.

And I've never been stopped from talking at a library.

Also, please, indulge me. How was my hour and a half long train ride from Brooklyn into Manhattan and then into Queens not a commute?

Well, those of us who don't have tantrums over the concept of a quiet car still are. :cwink:

And I've never been stopped from talking at a library.

But isn't the concept if being told to keep it down what supposedly makes you sick?

Also, please, indulge me. How was my hour and a half long train ride from Brooklyn into Manhattan and then into Queens not a commute?

How hard was it to say that you actually were a commuter when you were asked if you were a commuter? Was it that much more important to beat your chest with the "I'm a New Yorker!" nonsense instead?

New Yorkers are commuters, the terms are almost synonymous. Even if they're one of the fools who own a car.

And please, this isn't a tantrum, and as I said, I've never been told to keep it down at a library, and if I ever was I'd be LOUDER to spite those with the nerve to tell me what to do.

If you have a problem with something, YOU have the problem.

Yep, this is definitely a tantrum.

Ha, ha. I was unaware that sarcasm and standing up for myself equated to a tantrum.

Ferret is making a bigger deal of this than I anticipated.

As I said, I figure someone busted in on his quiet place, or he had a bad experience in a quiet car. :csad:

We should start a Hype quiet car.

I've never actually sat in the quiet car. I just understand the need for one.

I've never been on a quiet car, but I have many classroom stories involving something similar. A student (usually one of the more self-important ones that sat at the very front row) would occasionally throw an actual tantrum during the class if a few people in the back were whispering to each other (and most of the times the whispers were on topic in the class). While I laughed my head off in my most dickish manner at the fact that the tantrum did nothing but actually disrupt things for everyone, the class screeched to a halt and we lose more time because someone has a problem with a little talking. It's stupid and it's obvious that it's stupid.

I understand the desire for one, and I agree with removing the more fragile members of society from the main herd for their own feeble sakes, but I don't agree with the sentiments of silencing someone for the sake of a whiner.

I think there're a few PICS -- NO DISCUSSION threads in the Bat Boards. I'm bursting at my seams trying to not go in and discuss something.

So it's basically the principle of the thing that bothers you. The mere fact that it exists irks you.

Yeah. If you haven't noticed, sarcasm and spite are my bread and butter.

Thread Title = I bet she's black.

Lakeysha = What do I win?

A Racism award?

And I had a teacher in high school who punished a student for sharpening his pencil during a test by yelling at him, sending him to the principal's office, and then getting on the intercom to tell the office he was coming. All of it far more disruptive than the kid sharpening his pencil, which, frankly, none of us had even noticed he did.

That's not the same thing as the concept of a quiet car. It's impossible, and at this point even a little unfair to expect people to not use phones, ipods, computers, etc on a commuter train.

But as a courtesy, the quiet car was created for people don't want the disruption. No one is forced to sit there. If you want to talk on your phone, you can sit in any other car and talk away. Don't do it if you sit in the designated quiet car. It's not that hard of a rule to observe, and you have choices if you don't want to do it.

It's not that big of a deal.

The thing is, those things aren't a disruption, and if you think it is, grow a thicker skin.
