Flair and Kanyon clash on Stern!
Chris Kanyon appeared on the Howard Stern Show this morning to follow up a bet made with co-host Artie Lange. When Kanyon came into the studio, Ric Flair called in to respond to Kanyon's comments on the show last week that he was fired for being openly gay.
Flair said that Kanyon was not fired for being gay, but admitted he had no idea why Kanyon was fired. Kanyon continued to press why he had been successful and on national television for nine years and then suddenly did not have the tools for the show. Kanyon claimed there were no secrets in wrestling and everyone knew he was gay (though Flair denied he knew that). Chris then went on to say that he was fired because he was planning to come out of the closet and Vince did not want that. Flair said that Kanyon did not have the what the WWE needed and the window of opportunity had passed for him.
Talk then turned to why Ric Flair was making this call and not Vince McMahon. Flair said that he has always just wanted to be on the Howard Stern Show and wanted to talk to Kanyon because he liked him. Show producer Gary Dell'Abate came in and said that was not true and that he had talked to the WWE and was offered Flair because everyone else was in Japan. Flair said he still wanted to do it, and asked why Hogan had been on the show and not him.
After a few more minutes of talk about why Kanyon was fired, Flair left the show, asking for a time to return in the future (to which Howard agreed).
Although the two kept the conversation amiable and complemented each other as good people and gentleman, Kanyon did catch Flair in a number of backpedaling statements, including what skills Kanyon was missing, secrets in wrestling, and Flair's reasons for calling in. Overall, this segment did more to support Kanyon's case than harm it.
